I used to think the Highlander katana was the coolest looking sword. I dreamed of finding a really good quality replica. I guess this sword (and the Conan swords) really got me into the sword hobby. But as time went on I learned more about real historical sword designs and their history. Now I look at the Highlander katana and I find my ardor for it has cooled considerably. Kind of a 'meh' sword to me now. Anyone here feel the same way?

Same history, hah! But I could accept the Highlander katana as a nice fantasy sword, so no "meh". Aaaand... welcome to the forum, bunsword64! (1964 vintage too? ("cool", Highlander + Conan) )

I got into swords in large part due to Highlander.
I really like well made and functional movie/fantasy swords. Not the cheap made ones though.

I was never too much into highlander, but I had my share of fantasy swords I enjoyed but no longer care for

If I could find a replica with a real ivory hilt and folded steel blade...yeah. But the price would be . And I don't really care for Asian-style swords....go figure.

I think the overall design is still very cool. With some tweaks to make the construction, shapes and materials closer to historical tachi... oh man, it'd be one helluva beautiful sword.

Kind of 'tachi-style' would be really fitting. I'd even accept T10/1095 for a really nice hamon, as long as the rest of the construction was solid and looked good. That's probably the only way I'd really go for a Highlander katana... despite being VERY much into it when I was younger. So my answer to this thread - yes, cooled off, but only because there's no great replicas made out there these days... at least that won't break my wallet.

Pointgallery makes fantastic looking functional Highlander swords... they are the only licensed maker of such swords... they’ve made some limited models recently using carved giraffe femurs, which I think is the closest you can get without finding a rather expensive fossilized ivory piece for the handle. www.pointgallery.com/sword/pages/sword.html

While I've never been a fan of a Highlander sword (though huge fan of the original Highlander movie), last episode of Altered Carbon features a very similar sword and it looks really neat there. Kind of well put, and fits the final scenes well.
I've seen a lot of cheap look-a-like replicas over the years, but when seriously well done, this sword may be fabulous indeed.

Id love to see your take on the design! Ive always loved the Higlander Katanas. My favorite was Duncan's of course.Im gonna look at point gallery again, as i don't remember the giraffe bone tsuka.I had one as a kid, but plastic handle, wire hamon and 440c. Its since gone to a friends young son. I would UNQUESTIONABLY purchase a high quality replica 5hat was more traditionally made. I see mine in carved american holly, with some accents of gabon ebony and solid sterling fittings. Id probably use some abalone inlay for bands to accent saya fittings and some sort of kanji for decoration too.

Yes, born in the year of the British invasion. The Conan swords are awesome although I would tweak the design, especially the Atlantean sword--slightly longer blade and thinner bronze work. They are so freakin' heavy!
