V, thanks for the vid. I'm not trained in katana, or anything for that matter so I won't comment on your form as such. I'd keep that left leg back when cutting in that direction, if ya know what I mean. I have more luck when I step into the cut, lends power I believe. Go thru the cutting techniques thread if you haven't already, some good advice there. Looks like your doing okay to me, those two liters are a bit tricky I find, I think it's cause of they're shape. I was forever batting bottles when I first started cutting. (Still do occationally.LOL)

If your gonna step into a cut, you want to swing WHILE stepping so the blow lands at the same time as your leg hits the ground. If your step first then start to swing, it's pretty much all arm. Also you seems to be hacking somewhat. I generally like to push with my top hand while pulling with my back hand if I have a tsuba (obvious doing this with a shirasaya is just asking for trouble) or when I use a shirasaya (yeah I know not suppose to...but I do it anyways, just with welder's gloves on...and I know to grip a loose sword instead of letting go) I will just guide with my top hand and use the bottom hand to generate force by either pulling or pushing depending on where I want the blade to go. Generally when I use a shinai I use the latter method as it does allow for a faster and more verstile combat form...but the prior method does allow you to cut better (at least for me). And remeber to use the body. It has more power then your arm . Keep at it. And I'm sure this will start an argument about how I'm doing it all wrong (and maybe I am...) but this has worked well for me. You'll find what works well for you too eventually .

I went out again today and just did a couple bottles and it went better I think. I put my whole body into as suggested. Instead of just using my arms I was rotating my whole upper body.
