Bet you thought this was going to be an easy one. Here's the catch, it has to be one made before computer special effects took over the movies. Back when the story and the acting carried the movie. I'll bet some of the young guys are saying, they made movie before special effects ?

Came in my mind first too, but I can't decide between this, Ironclad and Excalibur. I like a Knight's Tale too, but it isn't really a Knight movie for me. Kingdom of Heaven, Arn? The older movies like El Cid, Prince Valiant, Knights of the Round Table, Ivanhoe etc have all their moments. GoT is not a movie. Jedi Knights? Decisions, decisions, decisions...

They did NOT make movies before special effects, no - SFX are a rather more ancient tradition, by a couple of orders of magnitude, than modern cinema. It's just that with cinematography you can do 'em in post-production as well as live (and the most visually impressive movies, from "Le Voyage dans la Lune" to "The Last Jedi", have always combined both). But no, I do get what you mean, although I think it rules out A Knight's Tale rather unfairly, and I for one would absolutely call it a "knight" movie, as chivalry and knightly romance (in every sense of both words) and being/becoming a knight are what it's all about... as seen through the lens of '90s underdog sports movies. Anyway, movies made before the widespread adaptation of CGI, huh. Hmm. Monty Python and the Holy Grail?

After reading the first line, The Warlord was my immediate reaction. For those of you who haven't seen it, do so.
The Lion in Winter, more political intrigue than medieval fighting but, a great movie with knights.
Braveheart - a lot of technical flaws but the action sequences are better than average
Another vote for Kingdom of Heaven

yeah, I'd have to say Kingdom of Heaven, the director's cut, and Ivanhoe, Ironclad. I CAN'T consider a knight's tale by the very fact of it's dialog. they didn't talk like that back then. I know what I'M gonna be watching on a night off, The Warlord

I like kingdom of heaven a lot. Another vote for that one. The full version of Arn is really good. A bit long and sections can be pretty slow but the vibe, the armor and of course the Albion made swords all make up for it in terms of a pretty solid medieval feel.

All time greatest knight movie based on a true story:
"Rudy"
.....Rudy! Rudy! Rudy!
Or since Andi already named all the classics in one post,
Excalibur, Kingdom of Heaven, The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc, and Braveheart

I knew this would happen. You missed the point about before computer generated special effects. Although I like Kingdom of Heaven it is loaded with computer generated special effects. Do you think they rebuilt the whole city of Jerusalem for the movie ? If you have the 2 disc dvd the second disc shows you all the computer work done to make the movie. How they turned a couple dozen Knights into hundreds of knights. I think most of the movies after the 70's started using them to the point now where they have taken over movie making. I wonder if the tower castle in The Warlord is still standing in some Hollywood back lot ?

Sorry, I see I really misunderstood. Then it would be The War Lord too. But I don't see a big problem in computer images for ancient cities, castles or villages. In earlier movies they used matte painting. But action scenes in complete cgi environment or with cgi monsters etc. is a different thing. For me it's the same with movies about WWI airplanes, cgi movies don't reach to the old classics with real airplanes.

No problem Rayon, I'm here for you. I have nothing against the new movies with all their special effects, the realism is amazing. I just wanted to point out that there was a lot of really good movies before special effects took over. Plus I was hoping that someone would come up with a movie I never heard of before. You failed me.

Okay, am I missing something here like a connection between Knights and soda cans in billow cases ? Or did you just have a major brain fart ?

I’ll have to echo Raylon’s thoughts. Between the movie and the daily chores, some of which got postponed because of the movie, my day was consumed.

Some people seem to feel Guy Stockwell stole the movie, all I know for sure I had a hard time taking my eyes off of Rosemary Forsyth.
