So I have this old Windlass Hand and a half sword I never use. It isn’t particularly balanced well (for my tastes), is kind of plain and just doesn’t “wow” me. I’ve a couple of options: 1.) leave or alone and just have it be a more ignored piece in my collection. 2.) sell it. I’m sure some out there are interested and have a thing for discontinued models. But let’s be honest. I won’t get much for it, nor am I in a pinch for money. or... 3.) make it anew. I would completely refinish the blade and make a brand new hilt and scabbard for it. I am wondering about a patina’d blade (Think morgul blade or something like some of the antiqued blades like Brenno has done such as “Passion Never Dies” or “Dragon Rend”) www.fableblades.com/Passion.htmlwww.fableblades.com/DragonRend.htmlWould love some ideas for hilt design but thinking of greyed steel with brass accents and maybe even a covered habaki like Ricasso sleeve... I dunno... Just noodling and would love to hear what you guys think...

Depends. Nice blade, however as your collection specializes in XIIa type blades, either the blade is not wide enough at the base or the existing grip is mega wide. If the blade is not wide at the base, no matter how you change the hilt, you may not find it "display case worthy".

It IS a pretty large blade

You could try to reprofile/shorten, maybe turn it into a one handed sword.

It's approx. 1/2 inch narrower at the base than your other medieval blades. If it was mine and the pommel unscrewed, I would remove existing grip and see what it looks like with a temporary, homemade, narrow width grip. If I liked the look I would at least make the existing grip narrower (and maybe change the guard and pommel). If I didn't like the look I would consider donating it to this forums New Years Giveaway (found in Announcements Section), or trading it. In other words, if a modified or new grip could be narrower than base of blade, with a smaller pommel, your sword could look like one of banzai's moat sale blade swords below.....haha!

I’ve some of similar width but not at this length. The profile taper is not a lot given it is an XIIIa and there is no distal, so my goal would be to add some weight in the hilt to pull back the PoB some, reprofile the edge and sharpen up the fuller. Then give the blade a possible antiqued finish with new furniture (fittings and grip). Lot of work for a Windlass but might be fun. Was wondering about a fantasy theme with a Gaelic twist and maybe go for a take on Caladbolg...

The infamous Dark Sword Armory blades look like it. Could get many ideas from them. One thing is evident, the grip is too wide for the blade and guard.

You could use some of the Printed Armory fittings that were designed for the H/T line and customize it that way. Although not meant for one particular sword the reichsleur double ring guard would look nice on this sword.

Make it anew! It may be a lot of work for a windlass, but you don't really lose anything if it doesn't turn out well.

Yea I say if you've got free time, want to practice some crafting, and don't mind any mistakes if they happen... why not refurb the whole sword?
If you're a smith, go as far as reshaping the blade and trying to make it lighter, cut down the tang and make it into a one-handed sword.
At the very least practice re-wrapping the grip, and refinish the pommel or something, make it a bit nicer looking. Refinish the blade if possible, with a less of a mirror finish maybe, to make it look less SLO\stainless (maybe it's just the pic).
