So due to a newly acquired revenue stream I am back in the sword market; I plan to eventually own 8 or 9 swords of various type and description (I currently own 2 keepers). One bargain brand sword that caught my eye is Universal Swords' 1821/22 Pattern British Light Cavalry Sabre. It looks great and if the specs listed on KoA are honest/accurate then it should handle reasonably well to boot.
The one sticky wicket is a video I saw on Youtube: Skallagrim's review of Universal's Austro-Hungarian Sabre. In the review he said that the knuckle bow/ guard came loose after some moderate cutting of a 2-3" tree branch; it really didn't take much. So now I'm really on the fence about forking out $400 (Canadian) on it: Skall had no complaints about the blade other than the poor geometry on the factory edge. A poor edge isn't a huge deal as there is an industrial sharpening service in my town that claims they can sharpen anything. My main concern is the hilt construction coming loose with moderate use. I don't abuse my swords but I expect a certain standard of performance and durability.
So looking at photos of the 1821 Sabre it looks like the guard coming loose is a real possibility, however since the pommel isn't peened in place but instead has a nut I'm wondering if there would be a way to repair any acquired play in the guard. If such a problem is repairable I think I'd be willing to bite as it is otherwise a great looking piece, and fairly true to the original in appearance. So what do you guys think, would it be viable to tighten the hilt assembly on this sabre in the event of the hilt/guard assembly coming loose? Any input is appreciated as I would love to add this sword to the collection. Anyhow thanks for reading.
