Well another thread was started about doing something that is questionable, someone suggested in that thread that we start a thread which allows us to deal with situations non violently.
So if no-one minds I will kick this off with a bible verse;
"A harsh word stirs up anger but a gentle word turns away wrath"
We have all been in that situation, the one where the guy is up in our face yelling abuse trying to bully us and force us to back down. Now most people's reaction is probably to try and "fight fire with fire." I'm here to tell you folks that that leads to escalation and what was merely some guy trying to bully you can turn violent even deadly.
So today I'm here to talk about just what it means to diffuse a situation non-violently. Now many people think this is a difficult thing to do but it really isn't.
The most important thing to dealing with a situation non violently is to be confident, not agressive but confident. Also stay calm, if you get angry you have lost the battle and you have lost the coolheadedness needed to get out of the situation without violence.
Always speak in a level tone but not condescending, make sure that you keep a neutral tone as well, even the slightest "tone" in your voice can swiftly get you into trouble, into a situation where violence becomes the only option.
Using your brain is the secret to getting out of this kind of situation. Always in these situations think out your responses, never respond without thinking through the implications of what you are going to say.
It is very important to control the direction of the confrontation, once you lose control you are in deep trouble. Steer the conversation, force the person who is trying to attack you towards a place that makes them lose their anger.
Last of all and I find this one a bit hit or miss but it is very effective, throw your opponent off balance. The best way I find to do this is make a stupid joke at my own expense, force my opponent to see that I am not a threat.
Last of all, don't get yourself into that situation in the first place, if someone calls you a geek or a nerd or even an emo just take it. Better to let them think what they want, it doesn't cost you anything to let them think and say what they want, it is just words and words generally don't hurt as much as getting punched in the face
I hope this helps.
