Paul and KOA can verify this. This is to demonstrate that I know what I am talking about. I am a victim of disorganization. This is hard for me to put this out there. This is not about spending money and going into debt or losing a marriage over this. For me, after I paid cash for a 3 story house and cash for new cars, I started my life long passion. Now I am looking at "real, real" words such as military issue engineer swords, a niche in the short sword world. As someone mentioned on this site recently, you can sometimes get authentic swords for the cost of repros. I find that used swords, like used coins and guns, have a special charm because of the honest wear and patina and the knowledge that they have actually been places and done things.

I don't have a 5 year plan yet, but after the holidays I will start working on one.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, right when I was thinking that Netflix was the Great Wasteland, I got looked on the Resurrection: Ertugrul series. It's historical fiction on the era leading up to the foundation of the Ottoman Empire with tons of swordplay and some occasional axe work.

My collection is rather slim, and I tend to keep it that way. Nothing against big collections - I just find my mind is disorganized enough as is without having to manage a huge horde. Besides - if I sell some items, that just gives me money to buy even more :D

Demonstrating financial responsibility is good, and glad you put it out there as well.

If you don't mind me asking - does such a large collection lend itself readily to redundancy? Even in my modest collection of antiques I find that I have (or would have had I not sold them) a few swords which just don't come out much, as I have other swords which carry out the same"function" - be it to represent a certain typology or represent a certain mood or period of time How do you stop everything from blending together?

Remember, these are prices from 2010.

$300 dollar zone, perhaps. This was the SBG's website selling strategy when they stared over 10 years ago. Great Swords under $300.00. they had many demos on destructive tests. I ONLY bought them after extensive research.

As far as the prices, the Tori's ($1,400 each) and the Musashi ($800 each) for example, went on sale since Hanwei was discontinuing the lines. I just figured that I got more for less cash.

To answer your first question - Yes and No. The yes response is the fact that I have doubles (i have researched each sword, saw destructive videos, bought books etc.) The No is the fact that after using and scuffing a sword, I then have a never used sword to display.

As far as blending together, I really try to keep each series (Tori's, Raptors and Musashi) separate from each other. For example, the Tori series, Tori XL, Tori Elite, Tori XL Light. They each are different. This way, I can look at each display, depending on how I feel.

By the way, the Tori and the Musashi cost from $1,400 and $800 respectively. I got these for a lot less since they went on clearance due to the fact Hanwei discontinued the series.

When somebody specializes they become knowledgeable about those little differences and with time can be discerning in what they buy and how they use them. They become an asset to the hobby and can advise others.
Storage and management, now that is a different deal! I have seen fotos online of people who have whole walls of their house covered with swords on display. If security allows, that is the collectors dream. If security doesn't allow, everything is packed into closets and the more expensive items in gun safes.

I haven't. Listing 100 ish acquisitions doesn't in itself suggest that you have lost control of yours and you haven't really EXPLAINED why you are disorganized. A couple of pics of a heap of unattended steel might be more indicative. Saying below is a list of 2 years of swords and then popping a FOUR YEAR list of purchases 2008-11 is puzzling. Have you been a good lil boy, and not bought nuffin the last six years, Vince???

I'm just messin with ya Vince. I've had a terrible weekend, (Job staff problems, Notre sucks Dame football, puter hard crash again, etc. )

If you still have the collection, you obviously are still infatuated with it. Show some picks and amplify the subject: PLEASE!!!!

Is this a roundabout way of doing a collection thread? Are you saying you got rid of swords you missed? Are you saying you bought stuff you wished you hadn’t?

Seems like this list is relatively specialized and many collectors do that. Some are deeply focused, some are completionist and some are just a smattering (like mine).

I am just not sure where the “what NOT to do” comes in here. Maybe I need more coffee but I am missing the point here other than a list of cool swords. 😜

First, I continued to buy swords at a record pace. At first I was able to identify which sword was which (easy when they are all different). But, when I purchased the same sword (with a different hamon, tsuba or length), I STARTED (unintentional) to misidentify the swords.

The "what not to do" is to not tag the sword and the saya that goes with the sword. I have swords on display (not tagged) and sayas not tagged. it is hard to put the swords in, since saya's tend to swell or contract.

I AM LOOKING FOR FUNNY STORIES of people with collections that had to take them down due to moving (space to small) getting married, having children.

I SHOULD HAVE MADE THAT CLEAR IN THE BEGINNING.

P.S When I stated the "SAME" sword, I mean the brand. For example
Katana blades come in about 3 lengths
Hamon- about 30 different styles
Sori (curvature) various types
Mune Quite of few (located on the top of the spine)
Kassaki- the end of the sword.
There are also many more options on the blade.
Let's do not forget handle length, Tsuba options etc.

Even though it is (Brand X), I could possibly have 30 different SWORDS from just changing the Hamon. The possibilities are numerous. I did not properly label my swords.

Another thing to think about in any collection is its disposition when you pass away. If you can't keep them straight, how can a spouse or child or grandchild? Most likely they will let them go quick at less than 50% of fmv. some at 10 cents on the dollar

I labeled one collection on non-sword items with photos, descriptions and low retail pricing about 10 years ago. I probably need to update it. Save the heirs a lot of grief.

I am fortunate to live where I do. No telling what I’d have if all I had to do was to click a few buttons on my computer then set back and wait for the door bell to ring a few days later. It is so difficult and consuming in time, energy, and money (I can expect to spend 2-3 times, sometimes more, than the vendor’s advertised price. Until my last sword I had to hire a lawyer to get me through all the government red tape. I guarantee all of that will slow you down. Everything aside, me just thinking about maintaining what you listed would make me think twice as I live in the tropics where Mr. Rust has nothing better to do than to pay me visits.

Mr. Rust and his family have visited and stayed. :( What is crazy is that they have not taken up residence in my car where I have two Cheness 9260's for the last 5 years or so. ( spoke to Paul at Cheness-- steel not special). I live in western PA. (10 below to 90+ degrees). The Rust family seems to have also stayed away from the ones indoors. :)

Mr. Rust and his family have visited and stayed. :( What is crazy is that they have not taken up residence in my car where I have two Cheness 9260's for the last 5 years or so. ( spoke to Paul at Cheness-- steel not special). I live in western PA. (10 below to 90+ degrees). The Rust family seems to have also stayed away from the ones indoors. :)

I think this is also part of what maybe Crom meant... this seems to be the other part of the Riddle of Steel. 😂
