I'm working on a project blade and decided I'd like to make the fittings myself. Something more fantasy inspired, and most of what is available is basic historical guards and pommels. What materials have people used to make your own? I have basic tools available to me like bandsaw, belt sander, hand tools. But nothing in the way of routers or lost wax casting tools. Ideally I'd like to end up with an antiqued bronze or brass look. Are large enough stock pieces of bronze available, or even practical? Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Bronze is pretty easy to work, you shouldn't have too much trouble with it with the tools you list. You'll probably need a drill as well. The couple times I've used bronze I've gotten it from here: www.speedymetals.com. They don't have minimum order sizes so you can just get what you need. Hope that helps, Alan

Awesome, thanks for the info. I do have access to a drill press so that should help a ton. Thanks again,

You may also want a cheap torch to soften copper alloys, makes you life easy when shaping it. A cheap cope saw is handy too. Careful wirh powertool speed, if you run it too hard, the filing acrually gets attached to grinding wheels (making it smooth), not as bad as grinding aluminum but still..

Thanks for the tip, I've never used a grinder on bronze or brass so that would have frustrated me for sure. Thanks!
