I was obsessed...
Totally obsessed...
I did not realized how much a problem it was until half an hour ago. Yes, truth came to me as a semi would face to face in a one-way street... And let me tell you that hurts.
I'm getting a bit emotional i know, in fact this isnt a big issue but since it made me so proud and look so stupid in a 10 minutes lapse i think its worth sharing it with you guys.
You see i just got my new DBK custom VA Atrim, did a couple of cuts with it and had to go to the end of my obsession; blueing the pommel and the cross guard. Brian did a wonderful job on it ( its the 2,5 suspention system with brown dye on his website ) but i had in mind that blued pommel and guard from the beginning, a service that wasnt offered by Brian... ( who by the way told me that the metal wasnt appropriate for such an operation ). So... two days after i got it i received my Birchwood gun blue kit and no way i was gonna wait a day further to get the job done. I told you, it was a real obsession ! Anyway, after a few preliminary tests i was ready to attack the pommel and its decoration ( which i wanted to stay steel coloured ) which i did under my wife's much amused eyes...
2 hours of careful applications later ( there was a good show on TV, it should have taken me a bit less time ) the pommel was done, perfect, a real good job. The decoration wasnt really an issue since the blueing liquid didnt take on it, but the pommel itself came out exactely as i wanted it. ( Tip : use a short, square and hard brush, not the Q-tip like device they provide you with. I've read it somewhere here on SBG and let me tell you its a really good advice if you plan to use this stuff ). The overjoyed and fumes intoxicated myself couldnt wait any longer to get the job done on the guard. So proud of my first attempt i jumped on the sword, took it appart, took the guard off to my table, took the brush and... thats where the semi-truck story kicks in.
It simply didnt work on it. I guess its an aluminium alloy or something, i'm no metallurgist but Brian was right, it doesnt work... It though i defied the probabilities after having it work on the pommel after Brian told me it wouldnt, but i hadnt guessed what was waiting for me on the guard end.
So as the pics better says it, dont try to blue the VA Atrim cross guards. ( my 6 years old did that weird zig-zag mark on the wall and threatens anyone who wants to get rid of it... she's cute in her own way i guess )
