Hello, everyone. I just recently joined this forum and some of you may have read my very first post in the Beginner's forum which was Fire Emblem related. Anyways, I am currently 24 years old and live in the state of Hawaii on the island of Oahu. I have always been fascinated with swords since at least the first LoTR film, but I think it started much earlier with those fancy Halloween ninja costumes for kids with the plastic sai.
I also drool over firearms, whether they be the real ones or the airsoft replicas. I think my interest in firearms started with my very first shooter game on the N64, which was Turok. The Halo series is my favorite so far, although I'm not amazing at the gameplay but I really enjoy the lore in the novels to the point where I nerdgasm whenever certain things are finally introduced into the main game (Spartan IIIs in Halo: Reach and Blue Team in Halo 5, etc).
My sword experience is very little. I've only tried kendo once back in 2013 after a dojo group had a panel at the local annual anime convention called Kawaii Kon. My friend and I decided to drop by at their dojo to try it out. Then I tried some HEMA when the local organization had live demonstrations at the same convention in the following years up to the current year of 2017. So I have an idea on forms, stances, and maneuvers. One of the things that stuck out to me was when one of the kendo students told me to hold the shinai with sort of like an umbrella grip.
My first real sword was a Musha "Fire Dragon" katana from True Swords. It was about $69 with free shipping at the time and I got it several months ago. I haven't used it for cutting yet other than stabbing and cutting the box it shipped in. The sword doesn't even stay in the saya; it falls out as soon as I start turning it upside down. Ironically, the metal collar thing at the mouth of the saya came off and the sword actually fits marginally better. I say marginally because the collar added like an extra 2 millimeters or so at the mouth.
I would like to purchase more historical and/or fantasy weapons in the future but shipping and handling anything to Hawaii has always been a bane for me. I can only imagine what it's like for international orders, so I shouldn't complain.
