Someone from Australia bought a sword from me, and so I went to the post office to ship it and they quoted me $275usd to ship it!
I've never shipped anything overseas, is this the normal rate for this?

Unfortunately, shipping anything down under is super expensive. The best thing (if possible) is to do if you live in Australia is to do a group buy and have all the items shipped together.

Someone from Australia bought a sword from me, and so I went to the post office to ship it and they quoted me $275usd to ship it! I've never shipped anything overseas, is this the normal rate for this? It depends a lot on the length. If the package is less than 24" long, and under 4lb, it can go by USPS First Class International, which is fairly cheap. If longer than that, but less than 42" long, it can go by USPS Priority International, which is about $70 for 6lb. See price tables at pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/Notice123.htm (Australia is in price group 10) If longer than that, USPS Global Express allows up to 46" (and you can fit a sword longer than that diagonally across a 46" by 35" box). Probably about $150 (Australia is in price group 6). If longer than will fit in a 46" by 35" box, then it's UPS, Fed Ex, etc., and $200 to $300 looks normal. For general stuff on USPS to Australia: pe.usps.com/text/imm/ab_012.htm

Yeah it needs to go under 105 cm or you will get slugged for shipping. There are a few tricks, one is shipping a the sword disassembled (I collect japanese sword so the handle comes off, and the blade out of the scabbard). Another trick is to pack the sword at an angle inside the box so you gain two inches or so.
Its a pain I know

Take a look at a mail forwarding service. They can give a better rate sometimes, as well as combining multiple purchases into one package for shipment.
