If I remember correctly he was chopping some vines in his yard and the blade deflected or the follow through struck his calf.

Yeah I read the story what I don't get is how it was physically possible to cut himself in the back of his calf like that.

it almost strikes me as physically impossible to get that angle of cut, it is easier to believe that someone attacked him and cut his leg. I mean surely you would stop the blade from cutting you if you had to have that much rotation and angle to lay open your calf.

I'm thinking either that's his left leg and he's right handed, or it's his right leg and he's left handed. Step forward with the leg in question , bent down like you're aiming at a low-hanging vine below you, and impulsively swing, imagining you've got a gladius in your hand. Seems perfectly feasible to me.
Foolish, sure, but perfectly feasible.
(No offense Half-Calf Tom, but I'm pretty sure you know by now that impulse cut was a bad idea.)

Yeah, horizontal on the back of the calf seems pretty impossible to do to yourself, I would think even a crazy overswing would still hit you in the front of the leg. Maybe he slipped from the overswing and fell down, or maybe the sword came out of his hand, those are the only things I could think of.

Umm..... ouch. That was a wicked looking abscess. Makes me love antibiotics and emergency rooms all the more. Ah modern society; I'll miss it if the SH the F. It also makes it a lot harder to not risk divorce and get a nice Gladius. If a quality Galdius does that much damage by accident I don't want to be on the receiving end of a purposeful assault.

I recently had an incident that gave me a WHOLE lot more respect for the power of a sword. I decided to switch out my computer desk for a different one and on the upper shelf sits a reproduction katana on a wooden sword stand. I picked up the sword and stand and moved them about five feet away to another table. This table wasn't quite wide enough for the sword so I angled the stand a little and as I did so the scabbard started sliding along the cradles. The sword fits very tightly into the scabbard and requires quite a bit of force to free it so I assumed it was the whole sword/scabbard unit that was sliding. I grabbed the scabbard right in the middle and had a sickening realization that it was actually the sword sliding out of the scabbard. I immediately jumped back away from the table and the sword cleared the scabbard, banged on the edge of the table and fell toward me. The edge of the sword caught my shin about five or so inches above the ankle. The cut was about four or so inches long and went from just a scratch at the top to deep enough to see the fatty tissue in my leg at the bottom. I ended up getting 5 stitches and a new appreciation of just what a sword can do to a body. This photo was taken about six hours after it happened.

Bloody hell...
It seems you were quite lucky. I don't want to think of the injury you might have sustained had you not reacted quickly and jumped back.
Swords really can do the damndest things sometimes.
I hope you heal up well and quickly, too.

Swords really can do the damndest things sometimes. I hope you heal up well and quickly, too. I'm still at a loss as to how this happened. That sword fits so tightly into it's scabbard that I can hold it upside down by the scabbard (about 1/2" from the floor, of course) and it won't come out. When I got cut it slid out from a near horizontal position. All I can think is that for some reason it wasn't all the way in the scabbard. Afterwards I was very sobered by thinking of the possibilities of what could have happened. The most sobering thought was of the sword somehow becoming braced and somehow thrusting into my lower body. The cut bled a LOT but even though it was scary as hell, about ten seconds of wondering "am I in serious danger here?" made me realize it's just a relatively shallow slash wound with very little chance of any major vessels or nerves being injured. Thanks for all the well wishes. It's healing well and the stitches have been out for almost a week. The dr. wasn't quite comfortable with the durability of the injury so he put steri-strips on and I've decided to wear them until sometime next week, just to be safe. We have a four month old puppy who just loves to play and although I've been lucky so far, I can see her hitting my shin pretty hard.

Damn...I can't imagine the pain he had to endure. He's a lucky man, though. It is for this reason that I always take safety precautions when using a sword. My family believes that I think my swords are toys, but that is not the case. I treat each and every one of them with respect. I always make sure I have control of the blade, and that nobody is anywhere close to the range of the blade, or even remotely in its path, in the event that the blade may fly out of my hand. It is no different with a firearm. You always make sure you have control before you pull the trigger, and make sure there's nobody in the way (unless your TRYING to shoot somebody, but that's a different story).
My brother made this mistake once before. He was being stupid and jumping up in the air and swinging his wall-hanger katana at a bug in the air like a flyswatter. Before long, he wound up stabbing himself in the leg. Fortunately, it didn't go very deep, and he was able to just clean it and put a bandage over it.

If you can get past the "I wanna be the ultimate Badass" crap. I think that this video of people fooling around with swords highlights the message. SWORDS ARE NOT TOYS.
Right on about 33secs she finds herself needing 13 stitches.
