Hello everyone I'm trying to find information on the markings on a sword. It has a curved blade and looks really old. Here are pictures of the markings. The seem to be a crown on top of "40" on top of "W". If anyone knows anything about them, please let me know! It also has an "X" on the other side.

Crown-40-W is a Wilkinson inspection mark (40 identifies the inspector? The place?), X means the blade passed the proof test (bending by a certain amount with snapping or taking a set, etc.)

Thanks Timo, exactly what I wanted to know. Would you be able to give me a rough estimate of the age of the sword? Here are some more pictures.

I was thinking the "4 97" could mean it was manufactured on the 4th month of 1897, or something like that.

Actually quite a rare item It is a British Mountan Artillary Pattern 1896 sword. I have the slightly more common Indian Army version with a stirrup hilt rather than the D guard on yours. Nice find.
