A) Most rituals are based in practical use. The "cleansing" of a katana was not as much about the blade as wetting the wrap/ito causing it to swell a bit and 'stick' to the hand. To better the grip.
Whatcha got?

Being from the state of Texas, I know of a local knife-maker who specializes in Bowie knives. He hand-forges all of his blades, and will only quench the blade in Texas crude-oil, straight from the ground. He swears by it. He asks that I not reveal his name, as his clientele is very strictly guarded, and his knives are sold by word-of-mouth only. Come to Texas with a good bottle of Scotch...my tongue may loosen. ...Chris

I should make plans. My wife works for the largest distributor of alcohol in SoCal. I have scotch coming out my ears.

Medieval linen and wool clothing is armor against insects. Mosquitoes and biting flies can't get you.

Water is essential for life on earth and seems to be a very biological thing, but it developed in deep space, in interstellar dust or supernova clouds.

1. The cracking sound a whip makes signifies that it just broke the sound speed barrier. In fact, it is the first man-made weapon to do so.
2. If you watch the chariot scene in 'Ben-Hur', you can actually see a car in the distance. I think it was red?

And the iron in our beloved steel is the result of the last step of nuclear fusion in big stars. So the material of our swords was Born in the Hellfire of Stars (I really like this saying, astrophysics is better than fantasy ) !

Ounce for ounce, the strongest muscles in the human body are in the eyes. If the rest of the muscles in your body were that strong and fast, you could stand flat-footed and jump over a two-story house...and outrun a cheetah. .....Chris

A pistol shrimp hunts this way: it snaps it's claw at it's prey, producing and firing a bubble that travels at up to 62 mph and a makes a sound reaching 218 decibels. It can also generate light (not visible to the naked eye) and produce heat up to 8,492 degree Fahrenheit - by contrast, the surface of the sun is about 10,000 degrees. Pistol shrimp also share a symbiotic relationship with goby fish. The share a burrow: the shrimp digs the burrow, and the goby fish (with it's superior eyesight) watches for predators and warns the pistol shrimp.

An avoirdupois pound is over 21% heavier than a troy pound. Thus, a pound of feathers weighs more than a pound of gold.
However, the troy ounce is about 10% heavier than the avoirdupois ounce, so an ounce of gold is heavier than an ounce of feathers.

Helium is a rare resource on earth and it's so light it floats into space Far more importantly, it makes your voice squeaky That stuff about the pistol shrimp is amazing (I looked it up). My contribution: The phrase 'scuttlebutt' (usually meaning gossip) is an old sailor's name for the drinking-water barrel. Butt=barrel; scuttle=making a hole in it for a tap. Sailors would chat around the barrel while drinking, hence the phrase coming to mean gossip.
