Hey all, (So I had a quick search but couldn't find any info, please point me in the right direction if this has been gone through before). I would like to know more about modern armour, I thought mainly riot gear but whatever else too. I was thinking of two contexts and wondering what available options there were that wouldn't break the bank. The two contexts which interest me are; to wear for hema type sparring (although of course there is gear specifically designed for this), and pshtf scenarios. Anyone out there know much about this? Personally the first things I want to know about first are helmets, I have been looking at a variety of riot, ex-military, and motorbike helmets but I really can't see what the best options are so any and all info would be most welcome

As far as HEMA goes, use HEMA specific gear. It's WAY better for that than any riot or motorcycle gear. Luckily the times we had to use those for HEMA are over and we now have good equipment.
For shtf, HEMA gear like an AP jacket would still be better than nothing. The jacket might turn away or at least lessen a majority of cuts with sharp blades (especially those with not-ideal edge alignemnt) and obviously provide protection against blunt trauma but it is very vulnerable to thrusts. I suppose for shtf you'd be better served with a bullet-resisting vest plus ideally stab/cut protection (I hear it's not so easy to have both in one) and a police or military helmet. For knee and arm protection HEMA gear or hockey/riot gear would probably work well. You'll have to lug it all around though. So helmet plus torso protection might be a decent compromise. Shields are nifty, too. Again very unconvenient to carry.

For post shtf event a cheap surplus steel helmet is great is you can attach a baseball type face shield to it. It protect you from most cuts and thrusting to the head is pretty hard feat. Most people will not be armed with a sword nor train tp use it.
I would possibly want tp have slashing resistant gloves (they are cheap) and fish factory chain mail arm guard before that if I am expected to get into a sword fight. . The idea is not to turn into a juggernaut, you need to be able to move and do stuff. In countries where guns are legal, way cheaper and lighter to get a 22 pistol and 3000 rounds of ammo (thats only 6 bricks, lighter than full armour). I know you are talking swords here but post shtf, guns will dominate the scene for our life times, if you don't have a gun, be prepared to run away or hide. Wear armour is the last thing you wanna do.

They have access to weapons, ammunition and shelter etc and places to make them. By the time they run out, they would have stabilized stuff in their regions. That is if we aren't talking inter-national World War scenario.

I think swords and armour only works in "wasteland" scenario where any military or powers that be have given up sorting out a region for now. Even then there will be guns. There may be some areas in the world where its very hard to find guns (legal or otherwise) for civilians, places such as japan and hong kong. In those places yeah, if the government has fenced off an area and leave the inhabitants to their own devise, there may be swords and armour. In places where some military/local militants are active, anyone else bearing arms (or armour) will be seen as a threat, not a good idea.
To survive shtf, one needs to stay grey, hide stuff and not display more.
