I've always wanted a handachi but decent fittings are rather pricey. So I was able to find a really nice set of repro gunto fittings, but in order to make it look less like a gunto and more like a handachi, I need to re-finish them. I'm thinking of either powder coating them a different color or possibly parkerizing them. The question I have though is how do I keep the borders and relief work brass colored and free of paint like on this original piece? I think sanding them after coating will probably be too harsh, but I don't think a scotchbrite pad will remove powder coat.

I could think of a scheme that would work with those as is.
You could parkerize, but you could also strip off the finish to bare metal (which is probably copper or brass)
You can also look at the seller "hyper-cafe" on eBay. They have decent handachi fittings from time to time (I have been looking for tachi and handachi fittings too).
Fred Loman also has a couple sets of nice handachi fittings albeit plain.

I've seen hyper-cafe's stuff, but the only one I liked was for shiro tachi and that was too much money. The set I got was only $80 and it's fairly well made. What kind of scheme are you thinking of? I'm thinking of something similar to this one world.choshuya.co.jp/sale/koshirae/aogai_handachi/index.htm

Very nice. Any idea what they used in place of same? Looks like some type of leather That particular one is leather yes. The sage/red scheme also looks really good with white samegawa that is a bit yellowed as well. I have a pic of that somewhere but would have to dig it up. But the red can look pretty good if you do a green/sage ito and like a maroon or grey saya...

You can also as I said strip the paint off chemically. I am guessing that the fittings are brass beneath.. then later lightly patina the brass and that would also look good.

Thanks for the ideas. It's going to take some time, but rest assured when it's done I will post pics. I bought a Hanwei Renshu I was originally going to use for this project, but now that I have it in hand it doesn't have the right look. I think I'm going get a KC shirasaya and mount that up.
