I've heard that O1 isn't ideal for longer blades due to it's chromium content making it tend to be brittle. I was wondering, however, if adding a mild steel core to absorb the shock would be a good way to overcome this.

Just use the proper steel to begin with, won't run into any problems down the line.

What Driggers said ^^ and consider that mixing O1 with mild steel (50/50) gets you a medium carbon content so youre not going to get good edge holding. Save the O1 for a knife and go with S7 or 5160 for a sword if you want high toughness.

It will still crack the 0 1 steel, just save the 01 for a knife blade.

All right, thanks all. I'll get a couple of good knives out of it.
