I think most know that getting good pictures of katana sword details can be hard, even with today's phone cameras. Long ago I would use a black light to inspect engine blocks myself or a friend was thinking about buying. Really helps find cracks and other issues with out magnafluxing something. I bought a small hand held unit a while back to aid in nihonto inspection, but just got around to using it to see details in the sword. The black light really reveals the interface of the hamon. Hada and nie crystals really pop out as well. If you were at a flea market/pawn shop/show setting this would help identify hagire as well. A few examples from my nihonto: Give it a try. It looks 1000% better in person than in pictures.

I'm just digging the lighting and color dynamics of those shots in general. Sweet photography! I'll have to give it a shot sometime, sounds like a nice trick.

Blacklight is a fun way to see some features of hamon (or many aspects of Nihonto). Candlelight in a dark room is another good one.

Candlelight is really cool, gives a sweet old school vibe. I've also had plenty of 'whoa' moments just using my phone's flashlight in a dark room. Really gave me a higher appreciation of K120C.

Interesting! Thanks for sharing such technique. This should reveal flaws pretty well.

I am getting a bit better at using the flash with the camera to see the hada much easier. So many ways to look at these swords.

Late to this thread, but I've had some interesting results playing with exposure settings on my cellphone camera, some of which I shared a while back in the "Khyber knife?" thread: sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/post/652827/threadThese were taken under a four-bulb ceiling fixture (ceiling fan) running "daylight" CFL bulbs at, if memory serves, 60 watt equivalence?
