So I recently picked up a James Raw custom katana w/ olive green tsunami ito and bamboo stalk theme, which is awesome btw It didn't come with a sageo however, so I've decided to have a custom one made for it in black & olive green silk w/ bamboo leaves. The olive green will match the fred lohman tsunami ito and the bamboo leaves are to match the theme of bamboo stalks on the tsuba, menuki and saya. I can't wait to see how it turns out, here is the way it will look: This is the front & back of each end of the sageo, so one side will be black fading into olive green w/ black leaves on each end, and the other side will be olive green fading into black w/ olive green leaves on each end Here's some pics of the sword to show the color ito and bamboo theme:

Thanks man The guy is in the process of making the final detailed graphic that shows where each part of the thread layering goes to make the bamboo leaves. Its pretty cool what all they can do with the device used to make this stuff. One is called a Marudai and is circular, which makes diamonds, s-shaped spirals, and "ripples" which are basically chevrons that are very common in sageos. Also called sasanamai or bamboo grass waves, pretty cool. The other device is the Takadai, which makes the more complex patterns and double braids, which is what he is using for mine. Its basically 2 separate sageo sewn together at the same time to create the opposite color scheme on each side...very cool stuff

I had NO idea about how these are made so thanks for the description!

No problem, I figured if I thought it was cool then someone else who loves that type of stuff would as well If you want to check out the pictures of these devices that make the sageo, as well as the types of patterns each one makes, check out the website yinterestingbraids.com/ The guy lives in Stockholm, Sweden and has a full time job, so this is just a hobby for him. That usually means that they will really take care to do a good job since it must be a passion to get home from 12 hr work day and want to do this until its time to go to bed again. Or at least that is the way I look at it anyway Just FYI, even though its just a hobby for him...its still not cheap for a custom silk double braid sageo lol Apparently, there's not much variation between different places, whether they're full time shops or hobbyists...its still expensive no matter what from what I've found. Thanks, Adrian Jordan...I'm looking forward to it as well.

seanyx11,
That's a very nice sword; love your design for the sageo. How does it handle?

seanyx11, That's a very nice sword; love your design for the sageo. How does it handle? Sorry it took so long to respond I've been busy the last couple of days and just didn't see this until now. It's kind of weird that I just noticed this, as I've also just gotten the final pictures of the sageo being finished, literally just a few minutes ago. As far as handling, its definitely a big blade and a chopper. It feels great in the hands, but I haven't gotten around to cutting with it yet as I'm still deciding whether or not to get it professionally polished. Once I decide to pull the trigger on the polish, I'll cut with it some since the scratches will be polished out anyway. This is my most expensive sword to date, so I'm very reluctant to use it as a cutter. I've got plenty of other nice Chinese made production blades for that role Anyway, here are the pictures of the finished sageo. I just got these pics from the guy that made it, so I haven't received it yet, pics of it on the saya will come as soon as I get it in my hands. Let me know what you guys think, there are some very light colored spots on the bottom near where it is tied off and he assures me it is just light reflections from the pictures, but it sure looks like some kind of powder or bleached thread spots or something. He dyed the green thread black to get the transitions, so there shouldn't be any other color thread, which is why its kind of weird. Here's a close up of the white parts I was talking about:

Thanks Verity. I think it turned out great, which I'm very excited about. The guy who did it was very easy to work with and was extremely patient with the whole design process. He helped me with several design sketches until it was exactly what I wanted. Not to mention, he didn't charge me anything until it was finished and I could see the final product. There's not many people that are willing to do that these days, so I would definitely recommend him to anyone that wants a nice custom sageo made. His name is Sida Yin and his website is yinterestingbraids.com/ Check it out if you need a nice custom sageo.
