I love forged in fire...just started watching it recently as I've gotten into swords. As for my search for the perfect ninja tanto sword...still can't find anything worth a crap. Everything I've found in the kiriha zukuri style that I'm looking for has been in the cheaper $100-$200 range. Not that those are necessarily "bad" swords, but just not what I'm looking for. I want a good quality blade with real same and silk ito. I did find one on ebay that's pretty nice, but it has a longer ji like regular katana, instead of having the longer shinogi-ji and shorter ji like most Chinese tang dao/ninja-to blades that I've seen. And it has an all wood finish handle like the saya...almost like a shirasaya, and I want a normal tsuka with silk ito. Though, the blade being the shape it is, will probably make it a better cutter, just not the same look that I was kind of wanting.

Haha, Tang Dao/Chokuto are an acquired taste. I am actually in the progress of having one built by an ebay seller. I had him set up the below link for my order www.ebay.com/itm/391747866689?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT I actually asked him to repeat what was listed on my message in the listing -Shirasaya -78-80cm edge -22-24cm tang (tang similar width and thickness to normal katana tang) -30-35cm handle -KIRIHA-ZUKURI ,t10 clay tempered -Curved -NO grove -NO black coating -handle with 2 bamboo peg holes can handle can be removed from tang like normal My order was very specific. To start off with I want it pretty long with a long enough tang to go with for balance. I also asked for it to have a katana like tang becuase many tang dao have skinny Jian like tangs, not rat tail, but skinny. As I was going to mount it myself, I asked for Shirasaya so that the saya wood can't be too low quality and there won't be cracks in the handle (VERY common in ebay katana, people just can't see it under the wrap). As for cost, I was charged $220 for t10 clay tempered. I was quoted $220 for san mai (t10, 1060) not clay temperated and $150 folded steel. I am guessing to sandwich a piece of T10/1095 between two thin layers of folded steel (folded steel is just for show, so for me the thinner the merrier) and put a hamon on will set you back about 350-400. The Tang dao brass fittings I got for $80 from another seller. If you just want japanese style fitting and wrap I guess about $400ish all up. Personally for that kind of money, I would rather get a folded steel DH one AND a TH 9260. The fold steel for the wall and 9260 for cutting. Having said that, for a standard katana sized one, he will possibly knock a 50 or so bucks off as saya/tsuka can be stock standard stuff. Yeah many Tang dao I have seen on ebay have hammon running off the edge or comes dangerously close. But if you custom order you clearly state that it must have say 3mm of hammon at the narrowest point. The problem with silk wrap is that they are super expensive, I pay about $60 for the ito alone. I like to wrap them myself as I can't find any ebay "custom katana" seller doing a better wrap then my own amateur jobs. I will put some pics on my tread when I actually get it, should be the next 3-4 weeks sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/50713/kamasu-kissaki-zhanmadao-project-updated?page=1&scrollTo=693207

katanafire.com/products/master-katana-keiki You can request changes to colour of rayskin and wrap. Good aesthetics and blade. You can't find much information on katanafire, so make sure you report back to us with a review if you choose to take the risk!

@ stopped1 - thanks man I appreciate all the links and everything, that looks like it'll be a nice sword when you finally get it finished. I really would like a nice folded DH straight kiriha zukuri blade w/ ochoji hamon, black silk ito w/ black full wrap samegawa. Yes, I know I'm probably going to have to bite the bullet and just commission one, I was just hoping to find something close to it without having to go the custom route. If I'm going to go through the stress and time of commissioning a custom blade, I'd much rather do an awesome shinogi zukuri for tatami cutting/iaido from a Howard Clark, James Raw, Rick Barrett, etc. blade and get all the koshirae custom fit for the blade in a specific theme. Alas, this takes quite a bit of time and money of course, so maybe the ebay custom kiriha zukuri is just the ticket for right now @ saix1 - I appreciate the help man That looks like the right style of kissaki, but I want a straight folded blade. Plus, I would want something with a little nicer tsuba, fuchi, & kashira.

In case you still want one built, I got mine today, don't go there dude, try someone else but not this gig I went with.... Edit: got full refund within 20 min emailing seller so possibly an honest mistake. Will I recommend seller? Possibly not. Will I say you will be ripped off by this seller? Nope.
