Admittedly, Japanese blades are not my forte, but I was wondering what the best dealers for production tsuba were around the net. I'd rather not buy off Ebay - but I'm just looking for a particular theme. (I thought I had a tsuba I could use from another source, but that fell through - just want to do a minor customization job on a piece.)
I imagine this question has been answered many times before, but I'd like current opinions from people. Thanks in advance!

Thanks pattyb! This is exactly what I was looking for - a little choice from a few different companies. I have a theme going on with all of the katana that I've collected so far, and I bought one with a tsuba that is a little out of theme.
Looking quick through the sites, I already see a couple possibilities.

Excellent! Glad I could help. You might also try Fred Lohman or Bugei. www.japanese-swords.com/tsuba-gallery/frameset.htmwww.bugei.com/tsuba-86-ctg.htmThey are all steel I think. Very nice choices. Fred Lohman will even add copper or silver bits to them if you ask really nicely (and add 70 bucks or so). Pricewise, they are "in between" at around 125 per tsuba. I've bought fittings from Bugei and am about to buy a tsuba from Fred Lohman as soon as my email is answered. Bugei is great! I'm addicted to tsuba and fittings now! Also, forgive the shameless plug, but I do have an iron and gold tiger themed tsuba I'm selling.

For cheap, and the same kind of fittings you find on generic Longquan katana: www.artsfeng.com/

I really liked one of the tsuba I saw on yamatobudogu - but with shipping - that would quickly approach the price I paid for the sword. It's more of a matching theme with everything else I had than looking amazing, thing.

I used to pause when I saw a sword fitting approaching the price of the blade, but I think it's important to ask: is the blade worth it to you? If yes, then have at it!

A good way to look at it. I don't know if this thing will be a favorite for some time still... we shall see. It's too new to know yet. A few more cutting sessions will enlighten me, I imagine. Also - I'm not the best at modifying fittings, so I'd rather mess up a 30$ tsuba first than potentially a 150$+ tsuba. -_-

On the plus side, if you end up absolutely loving the sword, you can always upgrade later when you have more experience modifying! Or I can spruce the tsuba up for you. I make and apply gold leaf paint to tsuba on occasion! I'll be uploading a how to soon. Will you be posting pics of the sword? I'd love to see it!

I'll probably go with one of the swords of might tsuba... the artsfeng stuff looks good, but I can't find the black/gold quite that I'm looking for. If I like the blade enough, maybe I'll look into a more unique black iron - and maybe take you up on the gold leaf - especially if I pick up one of the yamatobudogu ones I was looking at. I'm not too artistic myself - so I'll stick to filing and fitting.

I understand that. I enjoy the concocting like a mad scientist bit. I can send you pics of my work if you should ever decide to go that route. Those tsuba you are talking about getting are great! Love the blackened iron...
