This is arriving via post later this week, made by Andy Alm of Forged in Fire fame. It took him 4 hours to forge the blade from a high carbon steel billet, then he forge welded the railroad spike to the handle before hand grinding/polishing (stone grinding wheel). Lastly it was heat treated and then leather wrapped. A one piece of steel blade! www.facebook.com/AndyAlmDesigns/videos/1348396195219193/

nice, how much extra did he charge for the leather wrapping over his usual bare steel swords? i've always liked how it looked but didnt like how it was just steel and no leather

May I be crass and ask the cost? I made an agreement with Andy that anyone interested in one contact him directly on his facebook page (Andy Alm Custom Knives). I will tell you that the cost is less than what you might think!

Do you have the specifications on this piece?

Some, but not all. I should receive it via UPS on Thursday and will have more at that time. It is 48 inches long, structure except the spike are hand forged high carbon steel (I think 1080 but will verify). Blade portion is ~34" in length, handle is ~14" in length. It has distal taper. It was heat treated at ~500 degrees for a couple of hours prior to the handle being leather wrapped. I will post weight, POB and POP on Thursday or Friday. Any other info that you want?

Blade width and thickness would also be useful to know. I'm not asking for price but if you paid under $800 I'd be surprised.

Yes it was less than that for cost, that much I can tell you. Blade width I requested at ~1.5".

Just received the sword today (UPS delivery was delayed to to inclement weather). Entire sword length is 50 inches, blade length is 35 and a half inches, handle is 14 and a half inches. Blade width is 1 and a half inches. Blade thickness is 1/4 inch at the blade edge of the wrap, tapering to 3/8 of an inch halfway down the blade and 1/8 of an inch approximately 2 inches before the tip, which is 1/16 of an inch thick. Point of balance is 5 and a half inches from front of wrap. Weight is 3 point 6 pounds.
It feels VERY nimble and light in my two hands!
Thank you again Andy Alm!!!

I want one but this time a straight, double edged one :D Andy was one of my favorite FiF contestants and I love that he's known for a specific and very interesting style.

how firm is the leather wrapped handle? does it move at all?

Post by augustine on Feb 14, 2017 6:50:13 GMT
Rock solid, no movement whatsoever. Since the handle is continuous with the rest of the blade (whole sword is one piece) and the leather wrap is absolutely tight, there is NO movement.

Did you get it sharpened? How's the sharpening on it, pretty decent?

I did not even have to ask ... it came sharpened and the edge is SUPERB the whole length of the blade!
