Hi, for those of you who are not familiar with it: Being a swordsman and growing up with the Naruto Anime I always asked myself: would a real Kunai like shown in Naruto be of any use? Sure, Kunais were traditional tools/weapons in ancient Japan, however they looked a bit different from what I found. Unfortunately google picture search is flooded with Naruto Kunais. Anyway in the Anime those weapons are used for almost everything, like fighting swords, which is nonsense. But I wounder if they would actually be really good throwing weapons. On that picture its hard to see, but its actually pretty thick and its tip looks a bit like a pyramid, so its not our typical throwing knife with a flat spear head. However this lead me to the conclusion, that the kunais unique form allows for easy no spin throws, similar to darts and that because of its heavy body form it has a push back effect on the target, which a normal throwing knife does not have. So, what is your opinion on this weapon?

One guy on YouTube says the shape of a kunai isn't really any good for throwing cause the ring makes the release less smooth than other throwing knives.
However, I find that kunai make excellent rope darts on a budget. And if you tie a rag to it, it seems to aid in correcting it's flight in no spin throws
From what I read and understand, they were more direct digging and farming than they were for weapons, but many people in ancient history have used farming tools for weapons. Even in Europe!

To the best of my recollection they were actually tools used in farming. I think it was used to break up frozen or overly hard dirt. As such, it would likely be fairly effective as a blunt force trauma weapon more than as a dagger. I'm sure it would hurt really bad and cause damage if thrown.

The Kunai that are shown in Naruto have an overall nice design but I feel that throwing them is not their real benefit in fighting. I see with this Kunai design a use more like a push dagger or a punching aid being far more effective. Although what I really want to see is a usable reproduction of the Naruto Kunai go against a similarly made Kunai from the Expendables franchise.
