I just ordered one of these to match up with my Viking Sword. I have noticed that the blade appeard double edged. Can anyone who owns one confirm that for me? I have noticed that many people assume that the curved edge is the primary edge, but it appears to me that sax blades were typically wielded with the straight edge being used over any curved edge. Is that correct?
BTW - I watched a kinda lame movie called Pathfinder a few days ago and noticed that the main Viking character used one of these blades. You can see it clearly when he holds the blade to the throat of the main woman character in the movie.

yes the straight edge was the sharpened edge on a seax...have never heard of one being double edged historically...the unsharpened edges on the Hanwei Scramasax are the same thickness so either could be sharpened if you wanted...its funny Pathfinder was a remake of a 1987 Norwegian movie I would like to get a copy have a feeling it would be much more enjoyable.

Is this the blade of which you speak? (Casi got merged with Hanwei, I think) /index.cgi?board=swordreviews&action=display&thread=1987
In my opinion, "Pathfinder" may have been the worst movie since "King Arthur".

I've been lookin at on of these for a while to. They had one at the local sword shop for a good price butwhen I resolved to buyit, it was gone. Let me know what you think of it when you get it. I own Pathfinder too, definitly a comic book movie. Its a well known fact that ALL vikings had horns too, so thats historically accurate anyway..... ;D Its just a fantasy movie and I liked it..you just have to switch your brain off first I noticed the scram too...they also have the Hanwei Hero's Axe.

I suppose you could sharpen the other edge, but to what purpose, I cannot imagine. It is primarily a bloody big knife. And a sweet one at that. Martin reports that his did an excellent job in cutting his birthday cake......

It may not be the most historically accurate piece, but the general blade shape is really cool in my opinion. I also like the handle configuration more than any others I have seen.
BTW - I have been debating whether to get the bearded axe or hero battle axe too. I really like that double bit battle axe...it just looks mean.

I have one of the early bearded axes, still one of my favorite pieces.

Hey there Ric, at least Pathfinder gave birth to the Windlass Fantasy Viking, which is one hella sweet sword (which I need to go slay some bottles with soon). Never saw the movie though, but I did hear it was pretty bad.
I like the look of the Sax there, but I couldn't carry it in public, and that's about my only excuse to buy another knife.

I liked the costumes and the weapons in "Pathfinder". The story just sucked. I'm going to get one of those sax's myself sometime.

Yeah, I'm with you Ric. Pathfinder sucked. I did not like the story but I like the armor and weapons.

They may not be historicall accurate, but their horned helmets looked bad as can be! It was nice to see Clancy Brown with a sword in hand again.

I don't like mine at all. I bought it to accompany my Hanwei Godfred, bit the sax is just blah as can be to me.
It came dull, I can't get it as sharp as I like due to its sheer thickness. I dropped it once, tip bit into my wood floor and bent, though I've straightened it since. in my opinion the tip is just far too acute, though in its defense, 1) itals a mean thruster 2) of all the blades that have taken tip damage this is the only one that's about as good as new. I had a small boot knife for a good while that slipped and lost the last centimeter or so of its tip to my floor; my Kanestune Amatsuki suffered the same fate.
I'm thinking of selling mine. I guess overall it's a good blade, but the two of us just don't match.
Oh, and I really can't say the "back" edge lends itself too well to easy sharpening, though I suppose it could be done. If I did it I'd blunt the other edge, though. I don't like the idea of this thing being double-edged.

I antiqued mine using the lemon juice and rifle bluing method to give it that ancient look. Now any scratches just look like more personality in the blade.
