Hello all, new guy here. I'm mostly a fantasy sword guy, but recently my brother came into possession of a Japanese sword his wife's grandfather "brought" back from ww2. It's not a katana, too long, and it's not Japanese military issue. No stamp on the blade. It was in a garage for a number of years and had developed a good bit of corrosion. He works for Ohio university in the history department and some of the Japanese scholars think it might date back to the 1600s. I doubt it's by a famous smith, but it's age makes it in the very least, somewhat interesting. Any advice would be welcome. I'll try to get some pics posted.

If you could provide some images of the blade, fittings, and if possible the nakago(tang) it would go a long way to figuring out what it is or who made it. If you can show the tang especially, as a lot of Japanese swords will have markings that describe the maker, area and/or date.

A few of us do kantei. Myself and Jussi that I know of for sure. Post some pics and we will see what we can do. You may also want to post some pics over on NMB as well which is a specialized forum for nihonto.
