My New Skirt

I got my first Christmas gift of the year. It was a skirt to me from me. For those wondering I have not switched teams. This is a padded skirt, or a gambeson skirt if you will. It came from KoA and made by Lord of Battles, neither of which I have a commercial interest in other than being a full paying customer. The subject is officially known as Padded Gambeson Skirt-Black SNMC7640BK.
I had looked at the skirt for some time and finally decided to take the plunge. It is a nice skirt and well made but not exactly what I had expected. The KoA’s photo is misleading making me think that there was one piece with a split located in the rear. While in fact there are two, one front and one back making two side panels with a third and thinner flap in the front placed between the two side panels where they meet in the front. You’ll see it in a photo below. It is also of thinner material than I was expecting which was .44” as found on the gorget and optional half sleeve gambeson. The two side panels are about .25” thick and the middle panel about .15”. That panel maybe of some value but it really wasn’t worth the installation. I think the main purpose was to provide some sort of coverage even if cosmetic between the side panels which for the most part don’t stay together.
The main reason I bought the skirt was to fill a void that I had with my padded leg armour and the bottom of my gambesons in particular the shorter one. While it’s an improvement it is not as much as I had hoped for leaving my butt exposed. I could correct this exposure by lengthening the mail but don’t think it’s worth the added weight. Also the two side panels didn’t stay together causing some undesirable exposure.
It is light, doesn’t add to the heating problem nor hamper movements. Three nice attributes. And all in all I have no regrets ordering it and think with the modification I made worth the price.
I was dissatisfied with the front opening between the two panels, in fact very much so as it left me vulnerable. The cure I used was to attach two straps from which I made from materials I found in my scrap box. While not 100% effective from those Australian strikes it comes close, very close. FYI Australian strikes are those down under. After attaching the straps I thought of an alternative and that is to sew the side panels and flap together. I don’t think that would be as effective as those 6-7 oz. leather straps with buckles, but helpful and more convenient for some people.
Skirt spread open
Void area causing purchase
With skirt
Before modifying
Modified with straps/buckles
And it does help protecting the family jewels.
