Those won't be touched. We've gotten out front of it now. I think the areas where you may expect to see pruning are the old sold Classifieds and the Cafe. I previously thought that sweeps had been done outside of the Cafe and Classifieds, but I was mistaken. Dave went all out and sacrificed some of his own stuff on the alter of forum attachment memory, so kudos to him for being among the first to step up when trouble called. We appreciate it.
For the time being, aside from the aforementioned Cafe and Classifieds pruning don't expect to see a lot of change. Please keep up posting as you normally would, though we would appreciate it if you kept the size and number of uploaded attachments manageable. We'll keep pruning. This was a sudden reminder that it grows back, hahaha.

I'll go back to my posted reviews and will transfer the photos to imgur. My earlier reviews were using the forum attachment system. Some forums require the use of the forum attachment system in order to ensure that photos are kept in threads (such as in vikingsword) but I suppose SBG is far more active and has more "clutter" so to speak.

I am obviously public enemy #1. I've deleted some of my threads. It's too much work. Tell your data dink to just delete any thread that says David Kelly created it. I may start over when the rules get sorted out. I'm getting rather tired of SBG having massive heart attacks every 5 years and going into rehab. Many of us have offered to pay for the privilege to keep this place going. That has been rejected every time. I'm not quitting. But I'm not creating threads any more. Wanna see my chit, look for me on facebook. Your attachments I believe are hosted elsewhere, so should not effect their usage much. Was sad when I looked to reference one of your reviews today to find it had gone. I guess all good things must come to an end... Dave Kelly's pictures are linked from his own host and not attachments at all but linked images. It is any data uploaded to SBG (not linked images) that use space. As to bandwidth and usage, everybody uses it and anyone with a data plan generally understands that. Two different but related topics.

Some of his recent ones have attachments I think. But very very few.

I just had contact with Dave. All his threads, as far as I can see, are removed, but the comment sections are still there. Either let content with outside picture hosting be, or remove everything. I do not see why threads with pictures which are hosted on another site must be removed. Also Dave's content is highly important for a lot of people. Leaving the comment sections on line is a very wierd thing to do. My impression is that in the state of mind Dave is now, all his work of hours and hours of fact checking and writing and redacting and editing is for nought, he sure as hell will pack upand leave. Very depressed and sad. Sabres and talking about them is all he has in this fase of his life. Its all gone now. I am very angry and already contemplating to move my stuff to another forum before it gets ripped off and deleted. I mean, there are stupid moves, but this eats the effin cake.
Edit: Even if this happened because Dave said okay, remove my stuff, it should be clear that I believe he just was fed up, angry and depressed when he said that. So, since Dave hosts his imagery outside SBG, his content should be restored pronto, even if he said in a certain state of mind he wanted it removed. His content is too important for this site to let it go down the digital black hole.

Some of his recent ones have attachments I think. But very very few. Regardless, it was not the plethora of shared images he had been hosting on Photobucket that some (such Dave Kelly himself) felt were an issue and as he has now removed his posts (unnecessarily) the whole matter moot. As he remarked, see him on Facebook. I see knee jerking on all sides of the issue. That some don't understand the difference between attached or linked is a level of "whatever" if they can't actually grasp the concept.

Dave SHOULD have backups, but I do not think he really has them. It may be kneejerking on his side, but I can understand. I hope SBG has some backup server with the lot intact. I am sorry if I blamed the admins for what occured. I was angry. I still think Dave's threads should be restored. I hope they are in the Way Back Machine.

So, I have the low down. Some hack removed Daves pictures, not seeing these were linked. Big mistake. Dave was out to do some sniffing in his old threads and saw his pictures gone awol. Being who he is, he thought WTF? and deleted the text himself. In anger or depression or both. He told me that he will restore SOME threads if the coast is clear and he thinks it is safe to do so. I told him he better restore ALL threads or else. And that old geezers like him should not be allowed near a computer. You know he's still on some archaic kind of Windows? In this age and place? That's like analog? Oh, well. Big hoopla, were it not for the fact that somebody deleted LINKED pictures. Would be nice if that somebody mailed Dave and apologised and SBG made damn sure this deleting of LINKED pictures does not happen all over the place.
Cheers.

Perhaps the linking system was cut off for some time to find out where big attachment space is used and can be deleted?

Yeah the [i.mg] tag does not really count against the forum load. Hey my dad still sometimes uses a computer that runs on Windows 3.1. His main PC in the house is on Windows XP. And at times he plays with his old MS DOS laptop. And he isn't all that old

Gee Paul, thanks. Do you want me to mail you my left or right ear, before I report to the state asylum for packaging?
This is the third pogram I suffered thru in 6 years. Remarkably, I escaped the last two with little or no damage. (few hot keys don't work anymore on some of the older files.) This time I got burned.
The keepers of this forum have a right and obligation to protect the platform that supports SBG. While I cede some proprietary right to my intellectual property in using this service, Artistically these articles are still mine and their content is my vision and creation. You violate my aesthetic and it's gone. You don't get to cherry pick my art.
Unfortunately this has occurred at the same time I have been suffering thru a complete rebuild of our security system for the last three weeks. I am the primary functional user of this system, but our concerns have been ignored or misapplied. I see some heavy handed fire brigading going on here in a last minute fire drill, and you're damn right I got upset.
I'm sorry Adrian, but that's bulls***. I didn't take one for the team. I walked out on a butt f*******g. Don't sugar coat it. Looked like you were setting backfires and if granny and the little kitties died, it was for the common good.
Nothing personal intended Adrian. You volunteered for a sucky job. Much appreciated. If the board went nuclear you didn't have a range of options.

If you guys need a forum janitor I would be glad to help out. I got the time to carefully sift through threads and see what we will keep talking about and what we won't

Gonna toss out there that I would be happy to be a moderator. I wouldn't consider it a bad job and I wouldn't expect a thanks. I been coming to this forum for about 10 years now and I would be happy to help out by moderating. I don't need a thanks and dealing with angry forumites isn't really that emotionally taxing

My understanding is the Moat (Dead Threads Removed for violations) was deleted and the Café was trimmed. Adrian was working the old sales threads. To my knowledge, no other parts of the forum were touched. Am I missing something where the moderators deleted anything in other parts of the forum?

Yes. Dave's pictures from his threads on the Renaissance and Militairy section were deleted. That is how I understand it.

Wow, that blew up.
To Uhlan,
We didn't remove them, Dave did. I checked the security logs last night and saw that I was wrong when I thought that one of us removed his stuff. We've removed content from the Cafe and Classifieds. To make it perfectly clear, no moderator removed the content that you are talking about.
To Dave,
I understand, and no offense taken.
To edeweiss,
Thank you for your previous information regarding how the attachment memory works. We we're able to narrow down exactly what we needed to address and were able to avoid removing a bunch of stuff that wouldn't have made an impact on the issue.
To Djinnobi,
Thanks for the offer. The next time moderators are being chosen I will make sure your name is in the discussion.

To my knowledge, no other parts of the forum were touched. Am I missing something where the moderators deleted anything in other parts of the forum? On the first page of this thread, Adrian mentions having to comb through tens of thousands of posts and this would be entirely unnecessary if thought through a bit more clearly. If the server is currently storing classifieds back to how ever many versions ago, trim it back to the past year. Clean and dry, no need to comb anything that old. Post a notification of removing them in case anyone "needs" them. OOOps for not realizing old cafe threads would be axed but hey, learned something I imagine. "Combing through" and removing just attachments a grand waste of time. Target a cut off date. Dump the latest acquisition thread as entirely vanity and look at just by doing in that one thread, how much attached space you saved. I'm out of this discussion and leave it to those that can flip switches but gee guys, no need to bother the owner? What's up with that one wonders.
