Bought backsword, got it, blade was sweet, cut great, felt good, but handle and guard shifted and revealed a hide flaw we are all now intimately aware of.
Contacted Cold Steel, went from Dylan, who left to Russell, who seemed cool and getting on the problem.
I send sword back, tell them to either wait till they get the things right, 9not some epoxy shim job or send me a nother sword, willing to wiat a long time.
So they send me another POS, same damn issues and so IO contact them and after partly joking that for all the BS I should get the Scott Borad and the Dirk or even the French Imperila Saber. Well he says he'll send me the broad sword.
So send the POS back and wait...
My cponfirmation comes via email, I check it today and the sword is on the truck to my house, I am going to get the Scottish Boradsword. Awesome, doing Highland sword anyways, good to go.
Truck pulls up 40 minutes ago, take box in, open it up and.....
Another English Back Sword! Smae damn big gap between the sides of the blade!
Just called, politely gave the CS person my outlook when she said Russell was at lunch.
I did say if Russell can't help me, than I want to talk to Lynn Thompson.

Mine had the same problem, I bought mine from a different retailer so they ignored my emails altogether.

Just got an email from a different person at CS. They are overnighting a Broadsword to me and a shirt or two. He was apologetic.
Let's hope this is the end?

Good to hear your getting (you HOPE) some relief. Russel took care of my saga at CS, and I BARELY made it in under the wire to get a refund form Knife Center. That Backsword had so many nice features. Who knows, someday the may release a snag free 2.0 version.

Hey, I'd keep this thing as long as they sent me the broadsword. I just see either a lot of time or $$$ to make it safe.
Razor, they did send this 3rd one with the blade like on the 1st. Was tempted to keep my mouth shut but the principle was stronger. :-)

I really liked the look of that backsword/mortuary sword, and was strongly tempted to buy one. I'm glad I didn't.

Glad things are (hopefully) working out, though given how they have been going, its possible you end up with a second backsword instead.
Maybe they figure two backswords together are worth one actual sword.
Sad truth is that we are only a small minority of buyers - they can afford to give all of us a free consolatory broadsword with our Mortuary purchases and still make fistfuls of money.
Anyways, there have been warning signs about cs for a while, and this saga (at least for me) is going to put me off their products for a while

It's funny to me to read issues that pass Windlass expectations and then the CS being panned.
The love/hate relationship with mine has revolved about the anachronism, mostly in decorative design. In the end, if it squeaks, I'll oil it They will never rectify the guard slot to blade fit and while that may be an issue waiting to happen both that and a grip rotating are more readily going to happen with misaligned cuts and blows. At the price point, I would still list it as comparable to most of the Windlass' value. Mine almost sold on my table a few weeks ago but I explained its faults and sent them window shopping before making an impulse buy.
Hopefully Darth's broadsword will work out for him

Mine almost sold on my table a few weeks ago but I explained its faults and sent them window shopping before making an impulse buy. Hopefully Darth's broadsword will work out for him I have not personally been involved in this. However, from my understanding it not so much the issues with the physical sword itself, but the fact that the stats provided were not correct, and they do not appear to be taking any steps to correct either their information or their product. Several times have members contacted them and been assured that their non-spec product is a "defect" and will be replaced with one whic does meet spec, but I have doubts as to the good faith behind those statements. We also moan about Windlass for the same items, but at least you know what to expect when you get one. Personally, I agree with you in that its a great sword for the price, and it has many merits. I myself like the CS mortuary - but not enough that I can't decline to purchase one out of principle.

At what point does principle make for a spectator's opinion? The old split thread is many pages long with such opinion and my own participation. What I'm reading now is a recap from a sports commentator. More helpful (if that was the purpose in replying for other's benefit) would be to shag the internal thread links here and include them instead offering a third person synopsis. Repeating it all again here is a waste of electrons. What we still have not seen is the reported broken sword. There wasn't even a mention of where on the blade it broke. Ay any rate, we can cheer for Darth and hope that the incoming sword is a good fit and value.. Going by the tea strainer elite at myArmoury, the Hanwei backsword is the best of the lot but if one were to go to SFI in the olden days, the Cold Steel broadsword was getting an "OK" from a serious baskethead. One could do worse than reading what Mac and Vince (and a host of other old farts) have to say. " I also noticed, while doing some light cutting, that the blade can twist slightly at the guard due to an oversized tang hole. " www.swordforum.com/forums/showthread.php?1944-Cold-Steel-Baskethilt-review-by-Vince-EvansGranted, a review from more than a dozen years ago but anyone watching the market that as far as Cold Steel goes, the more things change, the more things stay the same. A single exception comes to mind with mention of the 1796lc getting better blade properties (the rumor I read anyway). There are a lot of old reviews in there and no lack of chatter about reproduction tea strainers on myArmoury and SFI. I know some of the principled probably don't like visiting those boards but many there feel the same about SBG. A shame really. SBG does share current events but an awful lot of old lore has simply been lost in the present enthusiasm and a different perspective. Here's Dale's old review on SFI www.swordforum.com/forums/showthread.php?1817-Review-Cold-Steel-Baskethilt-Broadsword

Thanks edelweiss for the review links. Though one may be irritated by the sometimes arrogant tone, my advise is to read the reviews they have. The more info the better when deciding on a new sword. Dale tells us he removed the liner and cut the fringe of the tassle thingy under the pommel. He used it as washer to fill the space between basket and grip. You need something to fill that gap after the liner is removed. Be advised that on mine this tassle roundel was made of plastic, with the fringe sewed and glued to it. I made a thick washer of leather. A little thicker than needed so it is compressed when the pommel is screwed on. Works and looks very well. I hope darth that you get the CS Broadsword. It is one of the few they did quite right. Since I cannot return the CS Backsword, mine was imported via Dave Kelly, I have been thinking about how to fix the too wide tang slot problem. The only thing that makes sense to me is to make a (decorated) thick round plate of iron, with the right tang slot and a slot for the blade shoulders and have the smith silver solder it on the basket. This will reenforce the basket at that point and keep the blade in line. Heck, I may even use some revettes to make it more ,,authentic ''. Plates to reenforce the basket and to keep the blade in check one can see on many a bowl of Spanish rapiers and even my old Spanish bowl hilted Cavalry sword has it. I must say though that those plates are often revetted or even screwed to the inside of the bowl. But never mind. I think it is a good way to fix the problem, though it is easier said than done. That plate needs to follow the curves of the guard, so the smith will have to do some hammering. As to the decoration on the basket, I have looked at that for quite a while now. At first I liked it, later on I saw some semblance to a sort of faux Art Deco, but now I see it as just a space filler. There is no purpose. It does not tell us anything, like designes of old used to do. No symbols, no story. How to fix that I do not know, but with the use of the engraving tool on the Dremel something could be done to make it more coherent I guess. It is more a kit sword package that needs quite some work, but the lines do agree with me. I walk past it every 30 minutes on the dot on my way to the coffee machine and back, yes, I am a coffee junk and it still gives me that ,, nice '' feeling.
Cheers.

When I mention the elite; Vince Evans has been a knife and swordmaker for 30 years or so. One may best know him from his dirks and his Wife's leather work. www.picturetrail.com/vevansTom McDonald had already been collecting originals for some years when SFI grew out of the Highlander forum. Truth be told, lots of forum sites splintered off of the Highlander/SFI tree. www.picturetrail.com/mactomDale Seago the penultimate Scottish ninja. Perhaps most loudly hailed for his Mythbusters appearance. The JSA section of SFI worth reading as an archive. www.imdb.com/name/nm2636587/David Wilson (probably lurking here ) The original sword fanatic living in a van down by the river. Has likely owned or handled just about any reproduction of a baskethilt. He had penned numerous articles and thoughts for the long gone SFI magazine, and forum back to the start. Others no spring lambs. Rabel Dusk a familiar face back to my own beginnings when poking about the net at the end of the 1990s. Heck, Netsword was one place readers could interface with Ewart Oakeshott, Hank Reinhardt and even Paul Chen of Hanwei (the latter a chat session). On the accessible scale of pricing, the India and Chinese baskets still do offer a place to wet ones feet. With the exchange rate, I think about Armour Class (thin blades though, not for everyone). The the sky is the limit customs, one posted here a ewek or so ago.

The first and this English Backswords ( the 2nd had a different, heavier blade) would be nice swords, even with the guard's metal being a bit weak, IF it did not have this handle/guard to blade fit problem. There is no excuse for that blade to be twisting or built like that. It's clearly a F up with CS's suppliers and they are passing it on to us suckers. 3 times now for me.
It looks like Windlass at least made the swords safe? I'd love to see one, but check their pics, they changed it, their fix involves steel, not epoxy.
The broadsword is on the truck, on the way to my house according to Fed Ex, if I get the broadsword and they don;t bother to send a return label for the EBS I have here, then I'd happily keep it...to take it to Baltimore Knife and Sword, Castle Arms or the like and have it mounted on a new and better guard. The blade is nice.

Some of what you said here is close to ideas I had for fixing it, making it better but I thought it would get the " It's not period, it sucks!" schpeel here. ;-) It is a nice looking and feeling ( the 1st and 3rd CS E.B. swords I've had) sword. My Lady loves the way it looks hanging along the edge of our window, it gets her used to me "decorating" with weapons about the house. I'll keep it if they don't send the return truck to me or have a label with this coming driver and eventually it would be a great sword, period authenticity be damned. :-)

Well a couple of hours ago I received the Cold Steel Scottish Broadsword.
It is a very stout weapon but wieldable and most importantly, safe for the user. My chief complaint to the people at CS I talked to is that I needed a sword to be safe enough for my 14 year old to use under supervision.
Thank you Jake at Cold Steel for getting it right.
The EBS is in the box, send a driver, after a week it gets degreased and put on a wall.

Always fancied the CS Broadsword. I'm now starting to find interest in Baskethilted swords in general now. Hope you guys have wondrous cutting sessions.

Played with it last night ( The Broadsword ) for about 30 minutes going through Angelo and doing some "sword dancing"
Workable, usable, a bit too heavy, has kind of "breaks" on it unless you cut fast, but I could fight with it if I had to but it would be cuts from the elbow, shoulder and full body, I would not use wrist cuts as a rule. ( I'd want a dagger, knife or Hawk with it though, too slow as a stand alone as it is IMO.)
But I look at the blade and it is a prime candidate for shaving some steel off and I cant see it being to hard to find something to replace the pommel for a heavier piece ( and with a shape that makes giving point a tad easier) and I want to put a disk like plate at the top of the handguard where the blade comes out because any decent rapier guy theoretically could stab through the top of the material into my hand. I think the weight of a 16 gauge disk, a heavier pummel and some blade shaving from the halfway point to the tip will make this a great fighting sword and hold me over till I can get the Hanwai, an armour class or say screw it and go custom/semi custom.
