i came across what appears to be an original 1860 US Navy cutlass this morning in a local antique store here in Pgh. It's in excellent condition with only minor discoloration on the blade and is light and truly nimble in the hand. i would have had pics, but i left my cell at home.
the piece was marked US Navy on one side of the blade and had the Ames mark on the other. it appeared to have been used , but not heavily and had been sharpened, but not recently or by an amateur. the blade wasn't sharp now. i believe it was marked at $600.

Should read USN, not US Navy. most have a DR below that. 1862 below that. It sould have a serial number on the inside of the guard. The Ames mark should be with the scrolled page background. These are still widely reproduced and the older reproductions fool even the careful at times. Most typically, there will be no wire on the grip. The price mentioned about right for a true piece in reasonable condition www.thepirateslair.com/9-m1860-naval-cutlass.html

I have yet to see a reproduction that replicates the scroll Ames mark. The cutlasses are fairly common finds.

this one has all the right marks, wish I had the clams to grab it. I also found dead a Belgian briquettes with its original sheath, but the sheath is damaged in the center. Still at $150 I may pick it up.
