I recently noticed that Ronin Katana is offering a kriegsmesser. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with, or opinions on, it.

Wow, looks nice it doesn't weight 4.5 pounds like the Cold Steel messer. And I thought I was upset my sword funds were dry already.

I like the look of the blade and fittings, although I'm not happy with the location of the seam. The "scabbard/sheath" is rather lacking and looks tacky imo. I really wish they did introductory prices as with the other euros

It does look tacky and also a little deceptive. The first pic I saw was of the scabbard and I thought "HOLY *&$# that's a massive blade", when I saw the actual blade I was a little disappointed. I was kind of hoping for a "Krieg-scimitar", but just ended up seeing a very nice looking, normal width blade.

Looks interesting can't wait to see more about it. About time we get more messer love from production companies at an entry level price is always nice to see.

It definitely looks more appealing than Cold Steel's offerings. However, it doesn't appear to have a nagel (which I thought was a defining characteristic).

Wonder how I missed this. Good looking sword and definitely better looking than Cold Steel's, but that sheath is pretty atrocious for the price; looks like something you'd get on a Pakistani flea market sword. Also kinda wish they'd just call it a two-handed saber instead of a kriegsmesser since, as Zenhydra pointed out, it lacks a nagel and that's kinda the defining feature of any messer.

Still looks good but it is also missing the handle slabs which is also common in leaders. I feel with all this it would better be called a two handed falchion or sabre.

I agree with Direwolf. I'd say it's a falchion and not a messer.

It's more a two handed hungarian sabre than anything else. I don't know the stats yet but the width seems awfully small for a falchion.

Well what ever it is I just want more info and to see it in action. If it's anything like any of the other Ronin European swords it should be an alright little single edged two handed curved sword.

Thanks for posting on this. I'm definitely interested. I've been on the hunt for a two-handed, single edged sword. Albion's The Knecht is the shiz... but so expensive. Cold Steel's MAA Gross Messer has been on my list - but honestly, i'm not crazy about that guard. It's good to have another option.

This one seems a little katana-ish from the pics, but I'm hopeful it's more distinct, and that someone picks one up to review. (BTW Gregory, you might think about the MAA Grossy with a little lightening by lopping off the unsharpened "yelman" part. Won't give it extra distal taper, but it apparently already has a fair amount. A much less time-consuming adaptation with just a Dremel, a cut-off tool, and a little smoothing of the cut section with sandpaper afterward, maybe a little reblueing--or back-edge sharpening. Something like this.) (Yup, as I pare back my overloaded project list, I'm trying to off-load ideas. ;) )

LeMal - that's some nice Photoshop blacksmithery. Now if you can just do something with that guard, i'll be ready to place my order :-)

What exactly don't you like about the guard? Anything a Dremel could also easily fix?

Are the ronin euros considered pretty decent? I've been looking to purchase my first euro and was considering one of these, but wasn't sure what the general consensus was. The sheath looks pretty gaudy, but the sword itself seems nice.

I'm in love with it. Really wish it had the Negal on the guard though. But it's still beautiful

Well, the current peened versions are fairly well thought of. The former ones with the screwed on pommels seemed to have bad welds with the threads on some. The new ones aren't considered historically accurate, more 'inspired' by a certain type, so if that bugs you then it could be a minus. They get more good reviews than bad, but there aren't a lot of reviews on them out there. They run about the same price as the Hanwei/Tinker lines, and the H/T's get a little more love from those that have owned both. I think both are good, viable options as entry-level Euro styled swords.

It looks like Ronin Katana edited the swords description, and removed the kriegsmesser reference.

It looks like Ronin Katana edited the swords description, and removed the kriegsmesser reference. Not if you click on the pictures. It still says kriegsmesser there.
