Hello everyone, I've been searching for a gladius in the $300 or so range. I've found several that look appealing, but i'm here asking folks who own them what they recommend. Online reviews are fine but I'd rather hear from enthusiasts with actual experience. My problem so far is that they all seem to have small grips. 3 5/8" grips are just not large enough. I've already got a poorly considered coffin handled bowie that my pinky hangs off of.. Any thoughts or recommendations? Thanks in advance.

I would also take recommendations on similar weapons without a huge ball on the end. Seems like it might force you to change your whole position rather than adjust your grip..

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately its got a 4 inch grip. I've noticed many of the swords I'm looking at are like that, the one handers anyway. Were armies made up of teenaged girls back then? Just kidding..the bastard swords and two handers were going to be my next foray..maybe I'll skip the one handed short swords for now. Doesn't look like there's much choice.

Look up the Hanwei/Legacy Arms "Maintz" roman gladius. It was my first sword, made from legacy arms before hanwei bought them. But I don't know if hanwei changed the grip. It is not historical correct, but an impressing beast for a "short sword" and has a very long grip, on the way to a twohander.

Exactly what i'm looking for..can't find it in stock anywhere yet, but at least there's hope. Thank's my barvarian friend.

Excellent. My palm is 4 1/2", not huge, but wide enough that I have issues with some knives, and pistols. To be honest if the grip is supposed to be that tight I may not care for the style..but the wider ones might change my mind. I love the blades though, the idea of a short, wide blade with a good point on it. The one andithebarvarian linked is appealing, and I'll check these as well, thanks for the info!

With your big hands you will get a real historical feeling with all the viking sword replicas with the usual too long grip.

Yeah I'm already drooling over the viking stuff..I'm going to wait until the maintz I want is restocked, I decided to get the Hanwei antiqued Scottish claymore..couldn't resist ordering it this morning from KoA. The reviews I've seen are all good, and Hanwei seems well spoken of for their lower end swords. I'm all over the place as far as what to buy, haha. Who can resist a five foot sword? The antiqued one looks pretty nice.

I was just looking at the Cinquedeas at CoA, I missed that one. Thanks for the input on grips too. I'm still not certain about a snug grip..I need to find a place in San Antonio where I can get a feel for the various types of swords. So far I'm not buying anything expensive, but still, I don't want to waste money on one I end up not liking.

Realy big grip, not too heavy and even usable single handed for me, because it's well balanced.

They look very business-like and serious I'm considering the antiqued bastard sword from Hanwei as well. I'll wait though, I've bought enough to satisfy me for awhile. A week or so, anyway.
