Hello Where does one find cheap tatami mats for cutting? I did a search on ebay and they were $100-ish. I might as well go chopping the cows:-)
Regards to all

That's not far off from what you'd pay, if you're including shipping. I just priced out a box of 10, and it's roughly 40 for the mats, but 60 to get them to me. Unless you've got someone local you can pick up from, unfortunately you'll just have to save up for it or find a substitute. Any chance of dividing the cost with friends?

If you want tatami omote, here are the main sources for USA. Where you order from depends where you're located, to save on shipping costs.
East Coast - Nihonzashi (Mugen Dachi and used Japanese tatami)
West Coast - tameshigirimats.com (Mugen Dachi tatami) or SwordnArmory (SnA)
SnA sells Mugen Dachi and a house brand tatami (Munetoshi). The Munetoshi mats vary compared to Mugen Dachi, but it's still pretty close to Mugen Dachi in resistance.
To reduce costs, I do bulk buys, pickup in person, and also recycle used dried tatami scraps overlaid and rolled in 1/2 mat shells that can provide a slightly more challenging target than "virgin" single rolls.

Dont but the brown ones from sword armory. The worst mats i have ever used. They wouldnt roll tight at all. Hell they were plain squishy and annoying to cut. Ive used their mugen dachi several times and have always been happy with their service

Ive used their mugen dachi several times and have always been happy with their service The long brown mats from SnA are ok if you reroll them and beef them up with 1/4 or longer mat scraps. They are softer and will deflect more than Mugen Dachi on bad cuts. I was cutting those for a couple months when tameshigirimats.com was out of stock.

i was able to cut them. but the other 2 people just couldn't get a decent cut in. I can see what you were saying about reinforcing them. but you shouldn't have to. these wouldn't even roll tightly. out of 3 mats the girl I was with only got 2 clean cuts. I can usually cut mats going pretty slow. but these I had to kick up some tip speed. it was annoying to say the least. I did get a nice triple cut in
