I've been trying to redo a grip but i don't know where to begin to look for the right kind of leather or where to acquire it.

There are multiple theories depending on what look you prefer. Check out this link for some excellent tips on both the leather and the process: www.yeoldegaffers.com/project_grip_2.aspI don't like using 2-3 oz leather (what I use for scabbards) for grips as I find it to result in a grip that's too large and the angles of the risers too rounded for my tastes, but again, that's entirely up to personal preference. I've used 1-2 oz pigskin with great success many times and also have some thinner .5-1oz stuff that I've been meaning to try. If you want good, veg tanned 2-3 oz or pigskin, you can find it in small quantities at your local Tandy leather shop. Alternatively, if you want enough for 1-2 grips, just PM me which one you'd prefer based on Gaffer's pics and cover shipping via Paypal, I'd be happy to send some your way. I hope this helps! -Slayer

Yeah, you want the thinnest leather available. It's just all around better for this purpose.
It has to be vegetable tanned, too! Modern tanning processes can leave behind trace amounts of chemicals that cause corrosion, and often produce leather that won't take and hold a shape properly.
The cheapest and easiest to find alternative is probably chamois, the stuff sold in almost any hardware store for polishing cars. It isn't smooth and shiny, more like suede, but it's thin and soft and can make for a very comfortable and perfectly fine looking grip. Just make sure it's actual leather and not synthetic!

Just to me.... SlayerofDarkness is pretty much right . Yes, one CAN use 2-3 oz leather for a grip. But while 2 oz is perfect, 3 oz starts to get fairly nasty Yeah, someone told me the leather i was using prior was too thick, i didnt know they were measured in ounces. Thanks for the suggestions.

Ebay is a decent source for thin veg tanned leather. Often though it is sold in large pieces. If you want smaller pieces try searching for 'pyrography leather' or 'book binding leather' in 1oz or 2oz, that sort of thing. These usually come in pieces about the size of printer paper.
Pigskin is excellent as is cow. Pigskin will have more visible pore holes from where hair follicles were. Other types such as deer are also good but might have a different feel- softer, stretchier, that sort of thing.
Tandy Leather will have whatever you want and it's best to call your neaready store to find out what they can do for you that is not listed on the website. They take credit card payment over the phone if you want it delivered (no PayPal). Randy shipping using usually a flat price so you might want to fill the box with some dyes or tooling/skivving tools etc. for the same shipping all at once.
The Leather Guy is another good seller who is on ebay (last time I checked at least) as well as having his own website. He sells everything from full sides to small samples and 1', 2' squares etc. just depends what he has in stock.
Just remember- veg tanned 1 to 2oz is your best bet for a successful and beautiful grip with a great look.
If you find something on ebay you can show us the link and we can check it out before you buy.

I like Aussie Kangaroo skin, - from Mr.Wiki - Kangaroo leather is lighter and stronger than the hide of a cow or goat. It has 10 times the tensile strength of cowhide and is 50% stronger than goatskin
