The guard and overall shape and look of the blade, and chape scream "Made in India" to me. I have a cheapo India sword and the blade is nearly identical, just a thinner profile, and the hilt is a perfect match.

Looks more like a fighting knife or a cutlass. Something to be used by Freddie Kruger while he's chopping up buxom high school dimwits. Swords are supposed to be lithe and provide reach over an opponent. This is a horror. Looks like somebody took it home and decided to make it look a little bit more awful, to impress his meth toking buds. Looks like the artful work of BudK chief cutler, formerly royal bedpan taster to Ming the Magnificent, Harvey SLO. Everybody has to start somewhere; the chase is more important than the capture. Lesson learned: don't zip up, until the creature is back in the cage. :) (You're not a swordvirgin anymore; you've been swordraped.) Little too thick? I have personally pissed away several thousand dollars in sword transactions gone to the devil. Buying something like the above is a very venal error.
The vast majority of sellers are honest. Many don't really understand what they are selling (so they are asking too much or not enough and subject to being robbed of the item they don't know the true value of).
Being able to sort out the bizarre trinkets for the natives, from the real stuff is a survival skill.
Feel free to ask here before you buy. Also you can take an items descriptor, google enquiry on it, and call up the images option to look at pictures.
All part of the great game.
Cheers

Great! It was described as "A Naval Midshipmans Sword" no year, maker or country? It wasn't a lot of money so I just bid up and when the music stopped I ended up holding the parcel - £38.00! Less than a small steak in Gordon Ramsey's gaff.A cheap and valuable lesson - next time I will do a bit of homework

Year is probably sometime in the 70's, Country is probably India, maker someone who's name shall never be known, not for sword making at least.

Don't get good answers, walk away. Using ebay, read all the data presented. Lots of European stuff looks tempting but says "made in China". If it's not from a known vendor, Hanwei or Dynasty Forge. run away. A "known" vendor of mine put up a replica advertised as the best representation of a certain sword currently available. I did one of those " I need to take this before somebody else gets a chance to" and bought it. Received it and it is a piece of #@!&$!. Paid 400.00 for a crappy 140.00 piece. And he wouldn't take it back. Da mor I learn, da dummer I duz :(

This looks a short blade - those became much more common in response to the British sword import laws introduced in 2008(?), which restricted swords with curved blades longer than 50cm. The simple Indian solution: make blades shorter than 50cm.

These are usually rat-tail tang wallhangers. If the hilt is secured with a nut, remove the nut, and then remove the handle and see what you have. If it's a welded-on threaded rod (the classic rat-tail), don't hit things with it.

The hilt looks like a Brit P1821. There is engraving? Looks like someone broke a Weapon Edge sabre blade and shortened it in a DIY way. The backstrap has lifted. The scabbard drag is Navy though.
Now go buy a nice stand for on your desk, so you see it every day, all day and have a plaquette engraved for it, reading: ,, I will never pull a stunt like this again!''. Or: ,, I am a greedy bastard, like Mr. Kelly''. Better combine the two.
Cheers.
