You even have a red glove to match! I was really looking forward to this Sabre, (or Szabla) Bah.

In the description of the sabre, there is talk about it having distal taper. That must be marketing hype then? The stats will tell for sure. It is a shame. That thing looks very good. Another member talked about the finger ring being placed too much forward. How's that for you?
Cheers.
Edit: Suddenly I am thinking about The M1829 Artillery blade for this thing.

It looks like the only sword ever made by CS that isn't considered too heavy is still the Messer. Of course, only myself and chrisoro have reviewed the messer, but I can't imagine anyone finding it heavy. That's a pretty saber. Too bad on the weight.

It looks like the only sword ever made by CS that isn't considered too heavy is still the Messer. They're not that bad. Some of their swords are even underweight! Cold Steel lightweight swords:1908 British Cavalry Saber - 7oz too light Italian Long Sword Cold Steel "correct" weight swords:Arming Sword MAA Butterfly Swords Chinese War Sword (the MAA version is overweight) English Back Sword German Long Sword Gim Sword Hand and a Half Sword (all versions) Italian Long Sword MAA Jade Lion Gim La Fontaine Sword of War MAA Messer MAA Norman Sword (both versions) Persian Shamshir Ribbed Shell Swept Hilt Rapier Two Handed Great Sword (the MAA version is overweight) Viking Sword Based on numbers from KoA or CS where KoA doesn't list it. Didn't look at their Japanese swords (which vary; the Gold Lion Katana is supposed to be about 815g), or sabres (except the 1908, if you want to call it a sabre), or stuff that out of production. Alas, many of those with OK weight are historically poor, or have that weight in the wrong place (typically at the tip of the blade instead of the base). I know that at least 3 of the above swords have good authentic handling, and some others I've heard OK things about.

Nice review but dang shame about that saber! It looked nice too. Cold Steel overbuilds everything especially their knives!
I look forward to reading the rest of your review Mr. Kelly

Thanks for the numbers Dave. At least the 6.27mm is something to work with. File the blade down to 3mm half way and to 1.5mm at the tip? I am sure I could make a piece of wood to fit the fullers and sand them deeper. I wonder whether an M1829 Artillery blade would fit that scabbard, curve wise that is. At 10mm under the guard it would be too thick to slot right in. Conclusion: Good looking project sabre sure has potentional to turn it into a relatively good replica of a Polish fighting sabre.
Cheers.

Nice review but dang shame about that saber! It looked nice too. Cold Steel overbuilds everything especially their knives! Again, as Timo pointed out, that's simply not true. What is true about the low price point companies (including Hanwei and Windlass) is that there are a few gems here and there, but you really need to handle them in person before buying. That was my mistake. Usually I drop by Cold Steel's showroom in Ventura two or three times a year, and would've handled this before buying; got too eager after I liked the Messer, plus I'd talked to Rick Baker for quite a while at Combatcon. Told him CS really should make a Messer and he revealed it was coming, and it was good, plus he told me that he's designed this Polish Saber upcoming too, so... Also, of course, there's the learning experiences of adapting to disappointment. First of all, I could've played around with this one a bit anyway then sold it for a minor loss. I mean, what's the worst I would've lost, maybe thirty or forty bucks. I think sometimes on this forum (well, often) we make too much about things we're less than satisfied with; look, just sell or trade it, and consider the meager loss a "rental fee." Then, you can be willing (sometimes to the point of special creativity) to mod them. Besides the process of thinning out the business end to something reasonable over the coming months, I just realised this morning that a good couple inches can be taken of the tip to take the blade to an on-foot worthy 30 inch length too. In any case, "I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him..." I have plenty of higher end (e.g. Albion, Arms & Armor) pieces, but in my estimation the claim to fame of them is you pay for reliable quality; you're not going to get a piece whose design and execution is a stinker. It doesn't mean there aren't pieces on the lower production end that are comparable at a fraction of the price. My CS Shamshir and Gen2 Henry V are still tied with my Sovereign as my three favorite pieces. But on the lower-end production pieces you have to test drive them first to find them--or take something that isn't quite here and turn it into one. I just had to re-learn the hard way not to let my guard down or be impatient! ;)

I bought the Cold Steel Grosse Messer back in 2010. this is heavy and was designed as an execution device. It was made to chop off heads. It does that with ease. That was a great sword. However, I through the years, that they are too expensive.

Thanks for a great review Dave. Had my eye on this since i checked out CS website for new products. I was hesitant to order it for exactly the heavy chopper, pig slayer, ice block smasher image cold steel seem to make alot of their swords to despite it's historical use, handling and background. I will give this one a miss, as beautiful as it looks, for the £320/$460 price tag I'd have to fork out to southern swords it seems not worth it for someone who values it's accurate handling over hulk smash handling.
