Hello everyone, there's a straight single edged pattern welded 1045/1065 blade that I'm very fond of but I'm unhappy with it's hardness.
Is it *possible* to harden just the edge (or the entire blade) without warping it?
I have a few crazy ideas but I figured I'd ask the experts first!
Thanks!

Of course. It would involve completely re-doing the heat treat, though.

Take a torch and heat up the edge, quench in oil warm vegetable oil. If that doesn't work heat it up and try quenching in water, no guarentees with mystery metal though. What are you basing your decision of "not happy with the hardness" on? You could work harden it! WHat? What do you mean by work harden it?

Thanks for the fast replies. What I mean is the blade seems very soft, it has developed wear marks and scratches on the flats of the blade just from drawing and sheathing it all the time (wooden saya). Also it is quite blunt, I would like to polish/sharpen it some day but I doubt it would keep it's finish or edge in it's current state. Ideally I'd like to harden the entire blade AND give it an extra hard edge. edit: here are some pics that show the scuffing on the flat and some scratches/nicks on the edge. sorry about the quality they are mobile phone pics.

From the photos, it looks like a damascus blade. I heard those are recommended for light cutting and mostly for display (Cheness). Why don't you try differentially hardening it?

Pattern welded is not 'damascus' and there are many high quality pattern welded blades which are capable of 'heavy' cutting. The folded cheness blades are not recommended for heavy cutting as they are low quality.
kvhokuto, do you know the manufacturer of this blade? Do you happen to have a full length shot of it? Looks kinda katana-y but has an interesting section on it in the second picture.
