I broke my Shrewsbury sword awhile back, some of you may remember. Over the last couple of months, I worked on it a bit at a time, and finally it's a sword again. I took about 7" off it altogether, made a rather jagged but pretty beefy new tang out of the old base of the blade. I had taken a couple of pics after I cut it, but apparently I erased them without copying them to my desktop. Here's a pic next of it next to the original scabbard for comparison. I made a new, slightly shorter handle out of walnut and covered it with gray leather. I also blackened the fittings, and peened the tang. First peening, pretty crappy I know. I beat the living hell out of the pommel in the process. The whole thing is looking pretty abused now, but I'm happy with that. I took it out and cut a couple of bottles to make sure everything was going to stay tight, then retired it to the wall. Balance is about 1" from the guard now.

looks like what happened to the windlass I bought about a decade ago ..... looks like the pommel being to tight put too much stress on the tang
