I've been thinking about what kind of sword Raiden's High-Frequency Blade from Metal Gear Rising could be considered as. It looks like the hilt of a full tang tanto and the blade of a katana, but I'm looking for the ones who actually know... What is the style's actual name? And if it's N/A, what could some ideas be? Thanks in advance!

Assuming this is Raiden with his sword - I don't think the hilt style has any name or style other than "tactical" or "tacticool", but the blade looks sort of like a straight, more pointed tachi blade in my opinion. Tachi blade - Then again, I don't know very much about katanas or Asian swords.

I would argue against the Tachi idea, the one in my collection, and all other examples I've seen, have a more severe curve than Raiden's High Frequency Blade. On the right track though. Raiden's sword is based off of a Katana, which succeeded the Tachi. I believe story-wise, it is supposed to be an ancient Katana mounted in high-tech modern fittings. Anyway, as stated above, the style of the guard and handle is mainly just sci-fi technicool design.

I did notice many similarites between a katana and Raiden's as mentioned by foxmartialarts, but I wouldn't exactly consider it that. It doesn't really have a tsuba (from what I've seen, every time it's been called "tsuba" they mean a disc guard), and the blade is about 1.5x the width of a katana's. However, we ARE progressing in our discoveries!

In Japanese sword terminology, the "tsuba" is the guard, but not limited to a circle type. Tsuba literally just means hand guard! Some people will occasionally confuse this with the tsuka, which is the handle itself. If you want a direct comparison blade to the above image, the cold Steel tactical Katana Machete has an almost identical one (http://sbg-sword-store.sword-buyers-guide.com/product546.html) as far as blade shape goes. There is no true historical counterpart; its a videogame sci-fi blade! That being said, one of the blades raiden uses, the red bladed Murasama, is actually based off of a real world Muramasa blade. Notice they flipped the MuraMASA into MuraSAMA. In-game, its a 16th century example, that was refitted. Here's another sword with the same style blade (http://www.wildbillwholesale.com/sw466.html). Don't buy that sword for use though; its pretty, but not structurally safe. It's a common blade type in art, but not at all as common on historical Asian swords. No need for such a wide blade! Basically, its an Japanese flavored original design. The Murasama has direct historical inspiration, but his plain HF sword is its own beast.

Thanks in advance! The style's actual name is just high-frequency blade. Seriously. I suppose technically you could call it a saber, since it's single-edged and slightly curved, or a dao if you were speaking Chinese... It's a fictional weapon with a design loosely inspired by some historical styles, but loosely enough that you can't reasonably call it any of them. It's not a tachi or katana or liuyedao any more than Cold Steel's so-called Tactical Katana Machete is. It's just a futuristic sword with a profile shape somewhat resembling any number of real historical sword types (and uncannily similar to a certain modern tacticool machete). That said, there's another character, Samuel Rodrigues, who uses a HF blade fashioned from an antique Muramasa sword; note that this is the fictional Muramasa, here, who's swords were so EEEEEEEEEVIL the very metal of them was actually blood red... All in all, it's really about as rooted in reality as anything in Metal Gear. The whole franchise is gloriously, unabashedly silly. PS. Case in point: Authentic civilian disguise!

It being fictional, and loosely a saber, and there being multiple saber types, what could we call this? Simply a Japanese saber? I've been tossing around a few ideas in my head for a while now: Zandatsu (cut and take) or Jamais Vu (never seen) Saber. Zandatsu is a technique in-game where Raiden strikes the weak points of a cyborg enemy and aborbs fuel cell electrolytes from their organs. However, if what we're cutting is a target and what we're taking away is their shape, then Zandatsu fits. Jamais Vu was (possibly) Raiden's codename in the bonus Ground Zeroes mission, so that's where I got that from. But what's everyone else's thoughts?

Jamais Vu was (possibly) Raiden's codename in the bonus Ground Zeroes mission, so that's where I got that from. But what's everyone else's thoughts? Honestly, I'd just call it HF Blade, like the games do. Or "tacticool sword" if I were talking to someone unfamiliar with modern Metal Gear. The electrolyte absorption is a unique ability of Raiden's personal customized blade, and not in the least relevant to the type of sword in general. And rather than trawling for obscure codenames in desperate search of a clever reference, you might as well just call it "Raiden's sword" and have people actually understand what you're talking about.

It kind of looks like a shobu zukuri blade to an extent. Given its properties, "Raiden Katana" could be punny.

Does he have a new sword in the Rising game or is it the same one he got in MGS2?
I haven't played the newer games (last I played was MGS3 which he technically wasn't in lol.) but I remember the MGS2 sword being a pretty standard looking Ninja-to hilt with a more tactical styled blade to it. Regarding it's classification I'd say it's still more or less Japanese themed with a sci-fi flair.

There's already a big image up-thread from Revengeance (I love that title ), but here's a more square-on shot of the hilt:
