Hello I was grazing the KultofAthena website, and it appears that Universal Swords has recently updated their Brit P1897 inf. off. swords. The old version had a terribly botched guard (reviewed here in 2010 by Dave Kelly). The new version appears to have this corrected. Good news for me, as I might gut one for a project sword Old Universal Swords product (2010, Dave Kelly image) New KoA image New KoA image

Wow! That is quite a change. Looks much better now. It seems that Universal is really trying to get their act together. This upgrade and some models with actual better distal taper. It looks like they work real hard to be the best of the bunch. Thanks bfoo. Nice to see this.

I'm not aware of any changes to their tapering abilities; however, that is also welcome news. Do you know which models have seen that improvement?
Maybe they're taking a cue from Empire Costume...

Not sure what it was before, but now it shows a taper of 5mm to 3mm. Somewhat under-built. Reminds me of a Windlass more than a Universal

More profound (from a consumer standpoint) is the possibility that several of the older Universal Swords reviews o this forum may be out of date.......

Makes me think of the modern Commonwealth officers swords being chiefly made in India. Perhaps these are now being made more available to the general public?

If you wish, feel free to add an addedum or write a new review. I am loathe to rebuy arms. I have received so much bull poop info from makers and vendors in this market that I distrust all of them. Even Yves Guinhut at Empire has pissed me off with changes to his story lines over the years. If you do intend to update, do so as a purchaser with the sword in hand; otherwise you can get to wear the monkey ears...

The issue I think is that the 1897 is not an uncommon sword. At $220, you might as well try to get an original. I think we snagged ours for $200 about a year ago.
True, it could end up being an amazing sword thats as good as an original - can't say until we get one. However, the numbers are not encouraging, with the KoA stats posting a good 3-4mm off at the base against my example.

Yes, but originals don't come with the same carefree sense of "I don't give an expletive" that repros do. For example, I routinely bring my Windlass Patton sword and 1906 to my fencing club and let the kids swing it around... wouldn't think about doing the same with an original anything (not without a lot of supervision at any rate). Also, my plans for the repro 1897 involve cannibalization... Hopefully I'll have one in hand in the coming year. I'm just waiting for the Canadian dollar to stop bellyflopping....

No doubt many thanks to you (and your wallet) for taking the plunge and wading through the fields of horse-manure that is reproduction military sabres. Will update as an when I get my hands on them (and I hope others will do the same). Personally, I'm waiting for a more favorable exchange rate and hopefully more improvements may come in the interim. I think it would be fair to start raising awareness that our collective information may be becoming obsolete.
