About me:
I’ve been collecting swords seriously since 2006, though my interest in them goes back to my childhood. Growing up I had stories of adventure read to me by my father, and as a teenager I read mostly Tolkien, Kay and other High Fantasy stories. I grew up in a family of European origins that had an interest in its own rich history, tracing some of our ancestors to knights and nobles in Medieval Europe and the Crusades. This background (spanning Irish, Scottish, and English cultures) inspired me to discover my roots for myself, and I spent some weeks in Scotland meeting distant relatives, visiting old family castle ruins, studying in the Clan Library and handling swords that were true historical artefacts. I began collecting swords after high school - wallhangers at first, finally owning my first “real” sword in 2003. I began collecting sword in earnest in 2006 and now own about 30 different models, though the number fluctuates as I sell, trade, or acquire others.
While initially my interests were exclusively in the European swords I also loved katanas – my first encounter with one was actually through the “Highlander” television series. I had also been exposed to anime and other Japanese media, and as I started collecting swords I figured I would probably acquire a katana or two.
Well I’m up to over a dozen katanas in my personal collection, and I have handled scores more both as a reviewer for the Sword Buyer’s Guide, part of the QC/Shipping Team for the SBG Custom Katana Project, and as a reviewer and now company representative for Ronin Katana. So it’s safe to say that the katana bug has well and truly bit me.
About the Ronin Katana Representative Position:
While I’ve been absent from the forum for a while for reasons both personal and professional, I was recently asked by my friend Chris Scoggin to help him out. Chris is very busy running the largest katana company in the world and so he doesn’t always have the time to spend answering questions, posting updates, and generally feeding the social media monster that rules over the internet. So what I’ll be doing is three things:
1. Posting updates/contests – blog posts from Ronin Katana’s main site, new products, sales, videos, etc.
2. Answering product related questions – Got a question? Start a thread in the Ronin Katana section or send me a private message and I’ll do my best to answer it. While I haven’t handled every one of Ronin Katana’s products I have seen quite a few, and I’ll do my best to give you input.
3. Collecting and compiling Ronin Katana reviews from around the web – positive and negative, because there’s no real reason to censor the negative reviews.
My goal is to be helpful and honest, which is exactly what Chris is hoping for as well. I have no intention of misrepresenting Ronin Katana products and will be very open about shortcomings or defects that I’ve come across. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask – that is literally what I’m here for.
Full disclosure – while I am not being paid for this role, I will be receiving some free products to test and become familiar with.
