I have a saya on the way that has been poorly painted once before. Just a quick coat of paint over the factory gloss finish.
What would be the best method for stripping and refinishing? Would a liquid chemical stripper be ok? Would that affect the glue used to assemble the saya?

Well I guess I'm going to do a hand rubbed finish with a dark mahogany or rosewood stain of some sort. I've done this type of finish on a few guitar necks, so the saya has a familiar shape.

I've never used chemical strippers before, but did refinish a Munetoshi Tessen katana a few years ago using sand paper. I followed a guide/tutorial on SBG about inlaying rattan on the saya (don't have a link, but you can probably find it by doing a search). Here's a link to some pics of it sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/42603/tameshigiri-tatami-mats

I aspire to be able to cut like that. As of now, the learning curve feels very steep.
