In case anyone has not seen it before, I just found a great book on Project Gutenberg about fencing (though I've no idea when it was published or when the author lived). www.gutenberg.org/files/12135/12135-h/12135-h.htmEdit: It says 1734, right at the top of the page (stupid <-------)

This is a table of contents which shortcuts to the sections of DiGrassi's Fencing system: www.musketeer.org/manuals/diGrassi/contents.htmIt's written a bit ye olde and can require a fair bit of concentration to get your head around it. Then here is the same fencing system translated and simplified into modern English. www.kismeta.com/diGrasse/index.htmIt's easier to read but not as detailed. I've got my first Rapier coming this week (hopefully) so I am starting to read up on it's use. Anyone wanna spar?

Ah yes, real rapiers, not those silly thrust only kind.
I've studied some Capo Ferro and also some Achille Marrozzo and of course Meyer's Rapier. Not too seriously, mind you - I focus on longsword.
But a nice cut-n-thrust single hand sword like that is a gorgeous tool.
I'd spar with you, but we're across an ocean from one another...

Hey Adam Im getting the Hanwei Gustav Rapier off Mike de Shumi. The original one was a broader cut and thrust style 'Real' Rapier: The one I'm getting by Hanwei has the thrust only blade, as they feel it is the want of the wider population. Still, I'm sure I'll want to try learning how to fence a little. Any other practical home training links or advice would be appreciated. The Gustav has been reviewed at My Armoury here.

Nice stuff Brenno, I look forward to a review of that one! I am planning creating a page for Renaissance swords soon. I've got a couple of Hanwei's - including a very similar one, the Torino. (review pending - still no testing). I never used to personally like these types of swords much, but that is changing quite dramatically actually... Mortarbug: Fantastic great post! Have some karma...! I enjoyed reading chapter I - of chusing and mounting a blade. Just as relevant today as it was when it was written (though of course, for different reasons! ).
