I'm a big fan of the way you write the backgrounds on your reviews. Forgive my nosiness but were you in the military? Your writing reads like many of the works I've read by retired officers. You seem to have a soldier's understanding of things, but that may be my imagination. Be that as it may, I, for one, am very glad that you have such a large collection and keep finding the time to write us these articles.
Big fumbs up from the Essex marshes!

Damn, getting tired. Just spent an hour finishing the write up, then blew it away without saving it. Grrrrrr... Time for bed. Will try again tomorrow.

Thanks for another great write up. I find your historical reports most informative as always. Do not stop.

Your typical excellent review, I wouldn't mind owning this.

Excellent review. As always, the Kelly(Tm) stats table is hugely useful.
I know you say that the taper and grind is not historical. However, from the table it does not look too bad. Sure, it may not be 100% correct, but taper from 7mm to 3mm is still respectable, so perhaps they deserve some credit? Better than some of the older stuff from India which only taper to 5+ mm at the tip.
Shame about the lack of fabric lining on the inside of the scabbard.

Shame about the lack of fabric lining on the inside of the scabbard. 2.75 lbs sounds like an improvement over some of the older 3.25 swords still out there. There is some taper in this effort, there are 4-6 ozs extra in the blade and it is out in the front of the sword where and how you don't want it for optimum performance. The 6.1 in CoB is a good indicator of that. 3.5-4 in would be much better ( and more typical for historic French sabers).

Thanks for the review Dave. All in all I think it is a lot better than the first generation. Talking of which: Did anyone notice that the ring furniture has been changed? On the first gen sabres these were mounted upside down, with the cannon under the cannon balls. I never noticed, but Mr. Guinhut once told me about it. KOA still has the upside down version I believe. Edit: Yes... www.kultofathena.com/images%5CUSS170_9_l.jpg

According to L'Hoste item 959 that is the symbol for senior officer sabres of line officers of the Artillerie au cheval et pied. Now he can b&G that one and sell them as a set...

Sorry. I was not clear enough. I meant the scabbard ring holders. KOA still has the upside down ones: Cannon balls on top of the guns. It has been that way for years now. The Train has them like they should be: The cannon balls stacked under the guns. Luckely not many people noticed. Guinhut was still mad when he told me.
Cheers.

Ya know I looked in three places and can't find a picture of the scabbard detail. Easy one to miss. Thanks for the clarification.

Dave you are why I don't post reviews...mine would look like a 4 year old did it compared to yours... You ARE too kind. I do have occasion to drop my pants around my ankles and fall on my face. As time passes and I ripen with age the number of tpyos and other brain farts seem to have grown by an order of magnitude. What the hell; it's a hobby. P-)

I'm aware of the concept of a "thinking cap". Havn't heard of a pair of "thinking pants" before (unless it's not with your brain that you do your thinking.........)
