The end result is I still suck. Finally I decided to just tie them how I like them and leave it at that. I'm not a martial artists and really don't know much about iato. Is what I did super insulting to the art? Should I just suck it up and figure out how to tie it right? Frankly I Dont mind how they look now. the closest I can come to what it should look like is scrunching up what imi already have (last pic) Attachments:

The reality is there is no "right" way. There are in fact many many different ways to tie sageo. And there is always the chance to come up with a new inventive way to tie your sageo. This is an example of 4 different ways to tie sageo But there are many other options and the reality is only limited by your imagination and ability to tie knots. One of the simplest and actually most practical ways to knot sageo is like this. Because the reality is sageo is supposed to be used to tie the scabbard/saya to your belt. all those fancy knots you see in sageo are for display, to look pretty. My sageo I wrapped against the saya so that it became a comfortable grip when holding and carrying the sword

Like you, I had to watch a few videos, stopping it every couple of seconds, until I could mimic what had just happened on the screen. Most of the sageo wrappers in the videos move so fast, there is no way a novice can copy it in real-time. Soon you will recognize there is one basic sequence of motions which are used for the tying, the rest of it is getting the free end loops secured. The final step is tidying up the knots so it looks uniform. Keep practicing, you will get it!

Thanks for the responses. Compared to the real deal, mine look kind of craptaculous. I really just want it to look like this. Time to keep practicing.

Mali, yours actually looks decent. Reduce the size of the loop on the top, get one more wrap on the right, and it will be spot on.

As a practicing Iaidoka for over a decade (plus other JMA's since the late 80's), I don't particularly pay attention to fancy knots on my sageo... I tend to go for the practical approach since I'll be tying the sageo onto my obi. But like others have mentioned, tying sageos can be a ritualistic part of the art, especially of the sword was meant to be a presentation piece and had to look nice. To each his/her own is OK with me.

Rather than watching videos, look for images like the T Buck one showing the 4 different types I posted. A static image that shows the path of the knot will be a lot more helpful than videos I think. You might have better luck by checking out this image tutorial www.ksky.ne.jp/~sumie99/sageotying.html*edit to add, here is another image showing a few different presentation knots and how they are made

Here's a video of a customized Musashi katana that I copied my own Sageo style from:
It's basically the same style as a standard Sageo tie, but only in one direction.

I go with a butterfly knot on swords that I use, even though I don't tie the saya down. My best efforts at presentation knots occur when I use a regular size sharpie as a place holder for the loops.
