Hi Folks, I see this (below) sword. $1,000usa. What am I missing? Somehow I totally am failing to see what makes it a $1,000 Chinese-made sword. Am I that oblivious to its features? www.aliexpress.com/item/High-Quality-Japan-Samurai-Sword-Katana-T10-Clay-Tempered-Folded-Steel-Sharp-390/32362811074.html?spm=2114.01020208.3.25.v7I5IZ&ws_ab_test=searchweb201556_7_71_72_73_74_75,searchweb201527_5,searchweb201560_9 Now I also saw this "Sanmai" katana....price much lower and though the pics are not the best, it looks to me much more interesting. Agree? www.aliexpress.com/item/hand-forged-san-mai-structure-laminated-damascus-t10-blade-Japanese-katana-samurai-real-sword-real-hamon/32438794819.html?spm=2114.01020208.3.151.XkDZDO&ws_ab_test=searchweb201556_7_71_72_73_74_75,searchweb201527_5,searchweb201560_9 Somehow, I kind of like this 2nd sword. ArtsFeng furniture?! Josh gonna love it!!! RinC p.s. Here is the Huawei sword store link, Huawei being well thought of by us at SBG: www.aliexpress.com/store/626440

Well, for starters, it's (kind of something almost akin to) a nagamaki, and those always seem to run high. Most would say that's because they're difficult to make well due to their size and dimensions, but this one looks pretty basic. Dynasty Forge had a nagamaki once, named after the legendary Benkei, that ran somewhere between $1,500-2,500. Cold Steel's "nodachi" ha an MSRP of $800, but can be had for half that through, for instance, Kult of Athena.
Granted, this thing looks more like some kind of wonky miaodao. The fittings are far more Chinese than Japanese, so what we have here is a very confused sword that's pregnant not worth what it wants...
I can't say the other sword does anything for me, either. I've seen better for that price.

What confuses me is that they are both via AliExpress and appear to be of Chinese manufacture. One sword will be shipped to me free with a shipping time estimated at 35 days. The other flatly states that it cannot be shipped to me. I know, it’s no concern of yours nor is it what you are looking for. Just strange policies.

... Granted, this thing looks more like some kind of wonky miaodao... I believe it's meant to be a zhanmadao, the Chinese equivalent of a nagamaki (or, rather, the nagamaki is the Japanese equivalent, seeing as the zhanmadao came first), but because virtually everyone associates (relatively) short two-handed curved swords with the katana, some of your more dodgy sellers tend to market anything even vaguely resembling a katana as a "samurai sword".

Could be, Vincent. I am not good at Chinese swords. I know the miaodao is China's answer to what most folk think of when they hear "odachi" which is what many modern production nagamaki are sold as, which is probably where my wires got crossed. Zhanmadao (horse-cutting sword, if memory serves) does seem more correct.

For added confusion, Cold Steel's "Nodachi" is actually a nagamaki (though I don't think many people don't know that one, except, apparently, Lynn Thompson), which is probably what caused the crossed wires in the first place.
