Good review! My Emperor katana feels and performs much the same as was described in your video. It is a very well balanced sword... not blade heavy like the CS Warrior katana. I was a bit disappointed in the performance when cutting tatami. As was stated in your video several times, it requires more effort to successfully perform a cut than it should. Certainly more than other katanas that I own.

I've never tested out a CS Emperor katana... could it be that the edge geometry/ha niku is too thick to cut tatami effectively? I have a prototype katana from a Chinese forge that has that problem with light targets, but sails through heavy targets with ease.

Blades with good niku can still cut tatami, it is just much harder. The flatter blades have a little bit larger of a range of error but are less forgiving for those errors. Blades with niku must be aligned nearly perfectly to cut tatami but are more forgiving to mess ups. They are also more effective at cutting harder targets. An example of this is the bugei blades that have niku are still used for tameshigiri.
