The crown on my small bunch of French Pallashes. This one escaped the alterations to the tip most of the others suffer from. It was made by the Ateliers de Précision de Versailles. Blade length is 99 cm. Total length is 116cm. The Ateliers de Précision de Versailles was in operation from 1793 until 1818. See: fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manufacture_d%27armes_de_VersaillesOne of the more famous people working there was Boutet. A very good source of information is a book by l'Hoste: Armes Blanches. It is not very expensive and contains all the information on French, German (Solingen), Italian and Spanish makers and vendours one could wish for. The symbolism of inscriptions and decorations is explaned and a slew of sword makers and their makers marks are listed. A must have for collectors large or small. My Pallash is in the mail, so a detailed review will follow sometime next week. I am very enthousiastic about this addition. Bumping into one at all, let alone in this superb condition, is quite extraordinairy.

I hate you. I'm sensing a bit of jealousy here Congratulations on the nice sword, must admit I have no idea how rare it is, looks very nice though. The book by l'hoste you mention, do you know if it's available in english?

Sadly, if you are insanely in luv with french swords you have to learn french; or at least learn google translator. Spend LOTS o time on google translator. Je connais un peu le français, mais c'est tres mauvais.

Je connais un peu le français, mais c'est tres mauvais. Same here, but be amazed at the speed with which you pick up key words and import. l'Hoste is not litterature, but focussed on one rather narrow subject, so certain words pop up again and again. The context of those words too, so after a while, a short text, he does not write page after page, it's all short pieces under pictures, is quite easy to follow. There is really an enormous amount of info there and the books are not that expensive. Without them you are quite lost and totally dependent on others, who may have things quite wrong. There is a lot of lore out there which is simply nonsense. Speaking French is a different matter. Thats why I love it when a French lady gives her man a good trashing. It sounds like very sexy music. The only thought I have when this is happening is: ,,Oh yeah baby, lay it on me''! And stand there beaming, with a stupid grin on my face, which fires them up even more. Ah, France!

Except for Quebec French - that sounds like a fistful of sandpaper in your ear.

Nasal in that it feels like someone blowing their nose into a microphone set to 11?

That is because they must suffer from permanent nasal infections, what with that cold up there, poor things. Was it not Rasmussen who said in his grand opus ,, Living with the eskimos'', that INSIDE those igloos y'all living in, things are quite okay, once one gets passed the awfull smell?

,,I know a little French too. But it is a miserable little turnip. Always juror. I calm him with a little bottle of wine in the forehead. Ah, sir, you are quite violent with your French. I prefer a softer approach. The bayonet is rather frowned upon now. Timid boy! I'm not saying cut his throat! I just want to improve their intelligence, with a little encouragement with a tooth in his head. :)''
Ouais c'est ça! Vin misérable slobberingand porcs violents que vous êtes.
If my French teacher Mrs Duburk reads this, she'll be waiting for me at them Pearly Gates and kill me again.

I'm sorry if our fun aside caused you some sort of offence, I was under the impression that this was Ulahn's thread, not yours. And I shall have you know that although it is far from perfect, my French is hardly "BS".

Except for Quebec French - that sounds like a fistful of sandpaper in your ear. Just because they added english in it. I don't know what sort of Québécois French you've been listening to, but the distinct accent associated with the dialects spoken in French Canada are a result of several centuries of linguistic isolation from Metropolitan France, not "adding English to it".

Montreal Canada is enough Quebec for you? Don't get me started with language, you have educated people who speak a very good French and not so educated who use a slang - mix of English and native words on a XVI century French - ok? And a lot of inbetween. Now stop the bs about languages on a topic about swords.

And now I let you making all remarks you want in whatever language you feel is appropriate for your awesomeness.
