"The blade is folded high carbon steel of 1045 and 1065, it contains 6,600 layers. It is regarded as the higher quality steel from this manufacturer and has a more finished polish that brings out its additional steel layers."
"the metal is through hardened"
any thoughts? Would you consider it to be good for practical use? Priced over 1k

A link with some pictures wouldn't hurt - a lot of Jians that come out of China nowadays are on the cheap side, and kinda all look alike. (Not all, to be fair, just a lot of them.) Sounds like a rather generic description of a Chinese forged blade to me though, so just be careful before you go and spend a lot of cash on it - check here: www.sword-buyers-guide.com/chinese-swords.html for some more approved Chinese blades. :)

2,4,8,16,32,64,128,256,512,1024,2048,4096,8192,16384.... Each fold of the steel doubles the number of layers... None of these numbers is "6600". If the vendor can't describe it right, you must wonder what other elements of the description they are getting wrong as well. Like Messenger said, a picture would literally be worth a thousand words.

I assumed it was welded in the "damascus" style with an arbitrary number thrown in. We'd be able to tell you it's relative value if we had the original listing. Though the Chinese Swords section that Messenger linked is likely the better place for this.

It will depend on the steel stack too. If they start out with six 1/8in bars stacked up it will be 6 layer before you even start the first fold. Your first fold will be 12 layer. But with most things it's just marketing hype.

Starting with 3 layers ....3072, 6144, 12288,... Still not 6600. But I digress, most of the claims of layers are exaggerated. I was bored one day and decided to break out the jeweler's microscope. Needless to say, my 4096 layer blade only counted to be in the hundreds of layers.
