Good Morning Everyone.
Being a complete novice on Chinese Swords, I have gathered some good information here.
Mostly, I have in my own mind, decided that to buy from China is a major risk and things are not what they seem.
But I have this dao that friends brought back from their son's wedding there. (they are not Chinese)
This is SUPPOSED to be from the 19th Century. It has some writing on the blade. It LOOKS old. There is wear on the finish and the ray skin grip worn. I had to tighten up the grip and guard, plus make a repair to the scabbard. The wood underneath appears old.
So what do you think? Common mass produced "Antique" Any idea about the writing? The seller told the buyer that it had to do with imperial service.
Thanks Robert Attachments:

Modern fake. Fittings, scabbard, overall style are very much like the usual modern fakes. You should be able to find similar on ebay and aliexpress etc. Quite different in overall appearance to genuine antique dao. The writing is in an archaic script (or is meant to imitate such). Mostly an ancient thing (Han and earlier), but sometimes appears on Qing swords (but normal Chinese characters and modern seal script are more common). Looks like it might be a sanmei blade (which isn't that unusual on these fakes). I just photographed two fakes recently, which might be interesting for comparison: The top one is basically a current style of fake (this example might be 5-10 years old). Not as ornate as yours, and thin sheet fittings (which is why the guard is squashed). The bottom one is older, but almost certainly 1990 or later. I'd say early 21st century. Thicker cast fittings. Some (probably) genuine antiques, late 19th century (i.e., very late Qing): In order, top to bottom, typical late Qing cavalry dao, civilian or militia dao, palace guard officer's dao, civilian dao.

It's probably fake, but it's worth checking out even as a fake since the construction looks pretty good.
