Decided to try out a couple of my Bolos from the Philippines today. The first is the custom I made into a spirit blade and carried with me to combat (never used for fighting).
The other is the Minasbad given to me by my wife's uncle. They are traditionally used for cutting sugar cane but this one was made with a fighting hand guard.

Wicked tools/weapons! Who put the fighting hand guard on the second one? It looks like a good job. They are still allowing our guys to carry non-issue edged weapons? My oldest son served in the First Gulf War and carried a Cold Steel Tanto with, I believe, a 10 inch blade. But he said that the Army was on again - off again on what they would allow. Great cutting and thanks for sharing.

That minasbad was made original with the guard. The guard is actually made from the brass from a WWII tank shell casing. As far as carrying the other one: the Army let me carry it because it is my spirit blade and I had to keep a memo from the Chaplain with it when it was on me.

I'm terribly ignorant on this--what's a spirit blade? Is it related to the beliefs surrounding the kris?
Good cutting btw!

My spirit blade links me to the life force of the Earth and carries my protection spells. It is a tool more than a fighting weapon. I carry it in dangerous situations and as long as the spirit blade remains intact so will I.

Very cool! Persian blades often bear inscriptions from the Qoran for a similar reason, and the armor was especially decorated.
I have a little necklace myself, with the earliest depiction of a guardian angel we know of--the Zoroastrian fravarshi, an Indo-Iranian cosmological spirit thing.
Where did you get the inspiration for the spirit blade? From your wife's family, your own exposure to it, etc?
You might want to see this thread that just popped up: /index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=4638&page=1
+1 for showing an under-appreciated weapon, and cutting like a man possessed!

Thanks. My inspiration for the design was function and handling.
My inspriation in linking to the blade is from memories of previous lives. I have always kept one but this is the first one in several lives that I have connected to stongly.
I noticed that other thread already. I am on 24 hr duty tonight so I plan on replying to that one when I have more time.
